Water Fasts, Juice Fasts and Detox Symptoms

This is the second part of our chitter chatter on call with Dr Ritamarie Loscaizo, co-creator of our six week deep tissue detox, we share with you our notes on water and juice fasting and why you sometimes experience negative detox symptoms.

Cleanse and detox

Although your body is in a constant state of detoxification as it tries to lessen its toxic load, it could probably do with a helping hand.

How? A cleansing or detox program.

This could be as simple as a water fast or a juice fast:

Water fast

  • What does it involve? Involves consuming water only.
  • What’s required: A minimum commitment of three weeks during which you, ideally, should not have too many commitments that involve you expending lots of calories(which basically means normal life!). A water detox is best done under supervision.
  • The experience: Profound, and maybe challenging.

Juice fast

  • What does it involve? Involves consuming juices only, and no solid foods.
  • What’s required? Consuming fresh-pressed green juices like broccoli, cabbage and kale that help the body to eliminate live toxins. These green juices contain phyto-chemicals that help stimulate the liver to process toxins and eliminate heavy metals from the body.
  • The experience: The juice adds nutrients to the body that water does not, so you may find this easier if you have the taste for green juices!

The symptoms of detox

Negative symptoms experienced during detox are usually the result of over-extending yourself when you have fewer calories to play with.

When you’re doing a water fast, your body is breaking down stored tissue and toxins but your liver has not increased its ability to eliminate toxins. With juices you are able to support the process; by blending greens into smoothies you are freeing up your body to actually detox, cleanse and eliminate

Take it slow and eat good foods

You also need to take it SLOW when you embark on a detox program. Relax and don’t get too stressed about it because stress can create more toxicity!

Eating foods that contribute to the cleanse or detox can also help.
