All About Flaxseed & 5 Easy Steps to Make Flaxseed Crackers
Written by Tera on January 24, 2011 – -By Maureen Lauder

For a teeny tiny seed, the flaxseed sure does pack a punch! Regular consumption of flaxseeds delivers huge quantities of lignans and alpha linolenic acid (not to mention bunches of fiber). Why do we care? Well…
- Alpha linolenic acid is an essential omega-3 fat that produces anti-inflammatory effects. This means fewer symptoms of asthma, less arthritis, fewer migraines, and less chance of osteoporosis.
- In the standard American diet, the ratio of omega-3 to omega-6 fats is skewed. We tend to take in too much omega-6, which promotes inflammation and bone loss. Increased omega-3 consumption (through foods like flaxseeds and walnuts) helps readjust that ratio.
- Omega-3 fats help reduce the formation of blood clots-which means less risk of heart attack and stroke.
- Omega-3 fats also keep cell membranes flexible, enabling better absorption of nutrients and eliminations of waste. There’s no point in extra healthy eating if the nutrients can’t make it all way into your cells, now is there?
- Flaxseeds also do an amazing job of controlling cholesterol. One study found that people who ingested 20 grams (about 2 tablespoons) of ground flaxseeds each day reduced their cholesterol counts at about the same rate as those who took statin drugs.
- Flaxseed also contains high quantities of lignans, which protect against breast cancer in post-menopausal women. Lignans also work to cut off the blood supply to tumors, thus reducing the likelihood of cancerous growth.
- AND, regular flaxseed intake has been shown to reduce dry eyes and minimize hot flashes.
Pretty impressive for a little seed, huh?
And flaxseeds are versatile, too. Flaxseed can be eaten whole or ground (they’re pretty tasty sprinkled on salads or other dishes) or used as a base for raw crackers, breads, and cookies. And flaxseed oil makes for a great salad dressing-light and yummy.
One of my friends makes about the easiest dressing I’ve ever seen using flax oil: she uses a spray bottle to mist oil on the salad, and then seasons it with fresh-ground sea salt and pepper. It’s amazingly good for something so simple!
And if you’re feeling a little more ambitious, you might try whipping up a batch of flaxseed crackers. This is an endlessly variable recipe, so use your imagination!
5 Easy Steps to Flaxseed Crackers
- Soak 2-4 cups of flax seeds in an equal amount of water for 8-12 hours. The seeds will get goopy and gelatinous. Don’t worry – that’s what helps your crackers stick together.
- Using a food processor, mix in a bunch of veggies: onion, sun-dried tomatoes, broccoli, kale, red pepper, whatever rocks your world.
- Add as much or as little seasoning as you like. (Suggestions: lemon juice, Bragg’s or nama shoyu, garlic, cilantro or other fresh herbs.)
- (Or, for a sweet cracker, skip the vegetables and savory seasonings and blend in some fruit–bananas and orange juice, perhaps.)
- Spread as thinly as possible on a Teflex sheet. Sprinkle some salt on top. Dehydrate. Once the crackers have firmed up a bit (after 10-12 hours), flip them over and peel off the Teflex. Continue dehydrating until crispy.
As long as they’re thoroughly dehydrated, these crackers will store (in an airtight container) for months. And they taste delicious with dipped in guacamole or piled with slices of tomato and avocado!

5 Very Good Reasons to Eat a Lot More Oranges
Written by Tera on January 17, 2011 – -by Maureen Lauder

I’ve recently discovered the wonders of the citrus peeler, so in honor of my new-found easy access to all kinds of citrus, I’d thought I’d take a few minutes to discuss the marvelous orange!
For years I’ve been clawing the rind off oranges with my fingernails-but no more! With a 99¢ citrus peeler in hand, the rind practically falls away. I’ve even discovered that I can score the rind ahead of time and have easy access to orange-y goodness all day long. A-maz-ing.
And it turns out that that there are plenty of other reasons to love an orange as well. Here are just a few:

How I Stopped Overeating and Handled My Late Night Food Cravings
Written by Tera on January 15, 2011 – -
I can’t believe it.
I’m having one of those major “A-ha!” moments in my life and I have to share it with you.
I look back at my life and I truly cannot count the number of times I felt more like my food controlled me, than that I controlled my food choices.
Overeating, eating late at night, pigging out one night, then “fasting” on water the next morning.
Sheeeesh!
Some days I wondered if I would ever break free from the constant obsession about food and the struggle to just find balance and eat the things I *know* are good for me in the amounts that I know are good for me.
Until now.

7 Great Reasons to Eat More Blueberries
Written by Tera on January 7, 2011 – -By Maureen Lauder
There aren’t enough blue foods out there, if you ask me. But as one of the few representatives of the blue (er…purple?) food group, blueberries do a pretty good job. We all know that berries in general are super-duper healthy, right? Well, blueberries may be the healthiest of the berries. Among other things, blueberries rock the antioxidant game: studies have shown that blueberries contain more antioxidants than almost any other fruit or vegetable.
Here are a few more reasons to love blueberries (aside from their general yumptiousness, which might be reason enough):
* Blueberries are heart healthy. Blueberries contain tons and tons of an antioxidant called anthocyanin that helps prevent cardiovascular disease.
* Blueberries support and stabilize the body’s tissues. The antioxidants in blueberries protect against free radical damage to cells and tissues, helping to prevent varicose veins, hemorrhoids, peptic ulcers, and cancer.
* Blueberries are good for Read more »

Raw Diva Fitness: The History and How-To of Hooping
Written by Tera on December 8, 2010 – -by Michelle Rankin
Hula Hoop is a registered trademark of Wham-O, Inc. so for the purposes of this article, we’ll simply use the words hoop and hooping, which I feel fairly confident that no one owns.
As usual, I’m not an expert; just the girl that volunteered to write the article and my qualification this time is that I absolutely love my hooping hobby. I use it as a quick break when I’ve been in my head working on a project too long, hooping helps return me to my body and grounds me, and I use it as a hip loosening fertility exercise. As a Mayan Abdominal Massage Therapist, I incorporate hooping as a warm up to loosen hips and lower backs as well as the hearts and minds of my clients.
In fact, I was introduced to grown up hooping at my Mayan Abdominal Massage training. A beautiful girl named Chaya brought two hoops and reunited many of us with our childhood hooping hobby. I was such a hooper as a child that my mom kept my pink peppermint smelling hoop all these years for memory sake. The thing that concerns me is that it still smells like peppermint after some 30 years but that aside, I’m glad she kept it. On numerous occasions I’ve picked up my old hoop and given it a whirl only to find Read more »

Let Me Tell You What I Think of the Raw Food Movement
Written by Tera on November 23, 2010 – -Oooh! With all this huffing and puffing I’ve been hearing about meat, veganism, raw food and dairy on Facebook lately, I decided it was time that this article resurface. I wrote it a few years ago, but it’s as true today and perhaps I didn’t say it loud enough the first time.
By Tera Warner
Okay, I admit that I’ve had more than my fair share of contradicting information when it comes to the “right” way to approach the Raw Food Diet, and today I’d like to set the record straight.
This morning I received an article in my inbox and it was talking about the dangers of consuming too much fruit in the raw food diet. First of all, I love the author and felt like everything was written with great integrity and clarity. The proof was carefully laid out, and the reasoning behind it all was perfectly “sensible,” and yet reading this article, I started to feel rather upset!
Why?
Because I could show you another link, well, dozens of them, in fact, that claim the complete 180 degree opposite of this to be true with as much “sensible” reasoning and proof to back them up as well.
Frankly what shocks me is Read more »
