BiG 2010 Green Smoothie Story Contest – Our Winner!
Written by admin on September 14, 2010 – -by Stacey Terry

Today I’ll share some of the great stories that came in for Believe in Green. We asked our contest participants to tell us how green smoothies had made a difference in their lives. Stories came from far and wide!
It’s easy to make choices that will affect others and the planet in positive ways. All it takes is a little thinking and maybe an effort to try something new!
Take a gander at these green can-do-ditties:

BiG Incentives: You Give us $10 and We’ll Give YOU $97 OR Stacey Will Sing!!
Written by admin on August 19, 2010 – -- By Stacey Terry
Sounds like a threat, eh?
No… we haven’t suffered a serious math injury around here. Our arithmetic is still ticking. Nor have I gone mad… (not counting the loose screw in my knee, of course). I’m just a green-smoothie luvin’ gal on a mission.
I started asking myself what more *I* could do to help raise $10 000 for The Lower East Side Girls Club and our International Green Smoothie Day BiG Event.
How could I use my skills to create more value, more incentive, and add more enjoyment to this experience? I needed to do the right twang.

In Honor of International Green Smoothie Day We’re Thinking BiG: “Believe in Green”
Written by Tera on August 16, 2010 – -Yesterday was officially International Green Smoothie Day and I am delighted to report that our Believe in Green program has lifted off.
We’re starting the event with a fabulous interview with the “creator” of green smoothies, Victoria Boutenko. I love Victoria (who doesn’t?!) and it’s been a pleasure to watch her skyrocket to success over the last few years with the popularity of “green smoothies.” We felt it important to pay special tribute to her work and so she was the key speaker for our preparatory day.
In that interview with me she shared some of her unusual personal habits, which I absolutely love, and if I could adopt them myself I would. Unfortunately skinny dipping isn’t looked favorably upon in downtown Montreal.
I’ve had the pleasure of connecting with Victoria on many occasions and this was really a special treat!
You can still access this interview at any time by signing up for Believe in Green.
We set a target of $10,000 in donations, and we’ve nearly reached the $6000 mark by now. It’s exciting, encouraging and inspiring to watch the numbers rise! Thank you so much for all those who are helping to spread the word and make this happen.
Last night at around 6pm Eastern, Robyn Openshaw, also known as: Green Smoothie Girl, came to the stage to share her helpful information on how to get the kids on board healthy eating, and how to get the whole family started on a healthier path to whole foods no matter where you’re starting from.
Robyn is a single mom of 4 kids (3 of them are teenagers, so I TOTALLY take my hat off to this woman!) and she’s self-employed. In the moments when I think I’m crazy to be doing the things I do, I think of her and remember there are crazier.
All kidding aside, I LOVE Robyn’s work and think her get-real approach to raw food is the perfect message for so many people who struggle with a 100% ideal.
I need to give BIG thanks to Blendtec who is sponsoring this event with a fancy, shmancy, brand new Blendter to the winner of our Ripple Maker award. Every year for International Green Smoothie Day we award one (sometimes two) lucky participants with a new blender. All they have to do is host a green smoothie event or do something to get the word out about green smoothies. The person who touches the most lives with their event will win the blender!
It’s not the easiest task in the world, but for a prize like this, we want to honor it with a worthy endeavor to make a difference out there. It’s a thrill to know that seniors’ centers, and elementary schools in Mexico have become the stompin’ grounds for green smoothies because of this event.
If you’ve not yet signed up, you can still access ALL the interviews when you come onboard. We set a target of $10,000 in donations and until we reach our goal, we’re going to keep the gates open! We busted the $6000 mark, so all we need is 400 more people to join us for this green smoothie event and we’ll be home free.
Thanks so much for your support of this event!
Love and leafy greens,
Tera
p.s.
Oh my! I didn’t even mention that 100% of the money we generate for this event goes to the Lower East Side Girls’ Club!

BiG Solutions: Going Green In Your Office The Easy Way
Written by admin on August 10, 2010 – -- By Brandi Cummings, Articlesbase.com

As we lead up to our BiG, Believe in Green event on International Green Smoothie Day, August 15th, we’re going to bring you some great articles from the net on how you can find simple ways to change your everyday eco-relationship with the planet. If you haven’t joined the 10-Day Charity Challenge, now’s your chance to think BiG!
Many of us want to be responsible citizens of the Earth. We think about the effects our lifestyles have on the environment. We are concerned about global warming. We want to ensure our children’s future on this planet is one that still has clean air to breathe, an abundance of trees and wildlife, and clean water to drink. However, many of us also think that the sacrifices might be too great to “go green” in our own office. Good news. It’s not as difficult as you think. Read more »

BiG: Believe in Green: 10 Day Challenge, 10 Big Thinkers (August 15-24th 2010)
Written by Fiona on August 4, 2010 – -Dear Passionate People-Lover,
With all this talk about oil spills and ozone layers it can be a pretty overwhelming to talk about “saving the planet”. Especially when you consider the fact that so many of us are struggling to save ourselves! The fact is, the rates of cancer, diabetes, heart disease, ADD, autism and infertility are rising as fast as the rates of green house gas emissions!
This is no coincidence!
It’s no accident that in a world of soda pop, plastic wrap, and microwaveable meals, we’ve started to see a lot more diabetes, arthritis, obesity and even cancer taking the lives of the people we love. Let’s look at the facts:
- World Watch Magazine reported that over 50% of annual greenhouse gas emissions come from animals raised for food.
- A UN Report supports the fastest solution to reducing ghg emissions is transition to a plant-based diet.
- Eating a plant-based diet dramatically reduces the risk of cancer, diabetes, heart disease and obesity.
Essentially, if we add up all the cars and factories and things that give off toxic gases it still doesn’t beat the greenhouse gas emissions coming from the cows, pigs, chickens, goats and other animals we use for “food.” And the bottom line is that if we stopped using these animals for food, we would improve our overall health and well-being.
I see a win-win situation happening here!
Maybe before we start saving up for solar panels, we could sprout clover and just start eating more fruits and vegetables? Maybe instead of spending millions of dollars in environmental debates, we could plant Swiss chard and wheat grass in our window sills? Read more »

I started as a vegetarian when I was 14, but gave up when as a married woman I tried to start a family and had a miscarriage. I was frightened (unnecessarily) about my diet having a bearing on my ability to conceive and started to incorporate fish and some meats back into my diet. Two children later, I found it difficult to get back to being vegetarian when the rest of the family were eating flesh foods so it wasn’t until my eldest turned 10 and was continually asking to become vegetarian that we made a pact, that we’d both go veggie as long as she would eat what I say she needs to eat for her health. She’s now almost 17 and I am happy to say we are both very healthy!
My husband and son are another matter. My husband is overweight despite cycling everywhere in his job, he suffers from Ulcerative Colitis for which I have had him on organic Molasses since April and currently he has no symptoms. At the start of the year we had a very stressful time as we both thought he had Colon Cancer, all the symptoms seemed to fit but two colonoscopys later we discovered he had UC running the entire length of his Colon and ten biopsies confirmed it was consistent with UC. The hospital have had him waiting 5 months until he sees the Consultant, this appointment is in two weeks from today and meanwhile he has been cured by my Molasses experiment, or so it seems! Would you believe they actually never prescribed him any medication, even though he was passing a LOT of blood every day? I think they will be very surprised at his turn-around in health due to the Molasses. Because of his experiences with his Colon health my husband is quite sceptical about eating a lot of greens and fruits, but he has been gradually coming around to the idea and in fact yesterday he tried my smoothie when I got a takeaway from a Juice Bar. He didn’t like it, due to the seeds haha! But I am going to continue to push the idea for him.
My 13yo son and I are both asthmatic, although I’m very well these days. Both my son and my husband eat a largely vegetarian diet for ease of cooking on my part, however they both supplement their diets with meat wherever they get the chance (lunches, eating out, and the occasional home cooked meaty meal). He has been suffering during the school holidays with wheeziness which has just about gone since he has been sampling my smoothies this past few days! He has noticed the benefits and we have been discussing the potential for his health if he starts having a green smoothie each day. I always hold out hope that he will become vegetarian full time, since he can see how easy it is for me and not to mention cheaper! I believe I have brought my children up to understand the basis of good nutritive foods and this coupled with knowledge of raw foods will give them a great start in their young adult lives when they become more independent.
My husband and I did a month of raw eating back in 2007 but we both found it very difficult. I seemed to be constantly trying to think of things we could eat and chopping ingredients. It largely consisted of raw patés and salads, and lunchtimes we were generally just eating a plate of greens with nuts and things. It became very boring and a real chore to chomp through. One thing I have learned from International Green Smoothie Day is that a glass or two of highly nutritious drink can contain all I need, including the fiber often lost through juicing, with no reason to feel I am missing out on the digestive process begun in the mouth by chewing one’s food. I think a lot of people just gulp down juices in the name of health, lacking in fiber and not bothering to chew, partly because they taste ‘like medicine’ because they haven’t got enough sweet fruits or water and because they don’t feel the need to chew – no skin or bits of pips or seeds. Of course, juices have their place in our diets, but the fiber lost along with some of the vitamins, minerals, fats, amino acids and other properties is a real waste unless the pulp is used to make raw crackers etc.
Anyway I am rambling LOL.
I didn’t hold an ‘event’ unless you count the event itself of taking more green smoothies in, realising several things including those described above, and also the fact that I can ‘get by’ with just my little stick blender! It suits my tastes fine but I’m not so sure I’ve converted hubby just yet as it’s not quite ‘smooth enough’ for him. I’ve educated and spread the word at my local juice bar, who are considering adding greens to their menu of available fruit and veggies, and I have gotten my parents interested in eating more things raw including Beets!
I’ve also realised I don’t ‘need’ to buy lots of raw superfoods like Maca, Mesquite, Lucuma, Blue Green Algae, et al to have a healthy balanced raw lifestyle and I am looking forward to setting out to be High Raw once again, with no guilt trips when I feel I want something cooked.
I feel I am off on my path once again; I just took a diversion is all! Thank you so much everyone for this opportunity to take part, learn more, feel more and share more!

We have two boys, 13 and 17! They fight over the fullest glass, even if it’s just by a smidgen! And our granddaughters love to drink this from their “sippie” cups. Minus the nuts and flaked coconut, of course!
- Approx. 2 cups of different greens (see below)
- 2 cups restructured alkaline water
- Pulse blend until liquefied
- 2 T. of flaxseed oil
- 1/4 cup of fresh coconut water from a baby Thai coconut
- 1 cup almond milk (optional) made from raw almonds is extra wonderful!
- 1/2 avocado (optional)
- 4 frozen strawberries (may use any other berry such as blueberries, raspberries, or all together)
- 2 frozen bananas
- Fresh or flaked unsweetened coconut (optional)
- 5 pecans or almonds (optional)
- Raw agave nectar to sweeten
Pulse blend until smooth. Blend for approx. 10 seconds, and then turn on high for another 20 seconds.
Mild tasting Greens I’ve had success with:
Beet Greens
Chard
Baby Spinach
Dandelion greens
These greens are GOOD, especially kale, but I use sparingly for my boys because they don’t like a strong ‘green- tasting’ smoothie:

I’ve Been Osterized! Getting a Cheap Blender to Work Miracles
Written by Tera on August 12, 2009 – -In honor of our upcoming International Green Smoothie Day, this is another friendly hijacking courtesy of the ever-youthful, ever-green, Green Smoothie Queen:
In preparation for International Green Smoothie Day, I’ve been upping my green smoothie quotient.
This morning was a test.
I’ve always told people that you don’t need a fancy, shmancy blender to do the Green Smoothie Challenge. I’ve always told people that they can just use a cheap $10 Osterizer from a garage sale to do the trick.
But as long as I’ve been a raw foodist, I’ve always had a fancy, shmancy blender. So what did I know? Until, this morning!
I had spotted his Osterizer some time ago and decided that it would be perfect for trying out some kitchen experiments for raw foodists on a budget!
Well stocked with Swiss chard from our little garden plot, and oodles of fresh fruit, this morning I decided it was time to pull out the OSTERIZER!
I loaded it up with:
- 2 fresh bananas
- 2 frozen bananas
- 2 peaches
- 1/2 cup of Mr. Right’s Tropicana juice.
If you’re hard core, just add water. I was trying to impress the Prince of Prosciutto, so I sweetened it up with some of his favorite juice!
Then I got this whizzing, whirring, stirring and blending in the old Osterizer until there was a creamy smooth consistency happening. (Honestly, at this point I was already very impressed with the smooth texture.) I was expecting the peel of the peach to be a bit chuncky, but it was smoooth as smoothie gets.
That’s when I started adding the Swiss chard.
I don’t usually add the spine of the leaves. I suppose I added about 5 or 6 big leaves before I called it quits.
I was SHOCKED, AMAZED, IMPRESSED and sooooooo SURPISED that the cheap little Osterizer had pulled off a green smoothie of magnificent smoothness.
Could she have pulverized parsley with the same finesse? I’m not sure.
Could she have done it to grape skins, or think, curly kale? Hard to say.
But this morning’s ingredients were no competition to the persistent little blades of this blending beauty.
I still loooove my Blendtec. I don’t think this little Osterizer could ever pump out almond milk or other concoctions that I’ve come to love with my fancy, shmancy blender. But the proof is definitely in the green pudding this morning:
When you’re starting out on green smoothies
and managing a budget, you definitely,
definitely do NOT need to spend
a fortune on a blender!
P.S.
Aside from the 10 reasons I’ve written before about why I prefer Blendtec, and aside from the fact that Blendtec wins the banana ice cream making competition HANDS DOWN, E V E R Y TIME over other blenders that might attempt to compete against it, the BIGGEST reason I am fiercely loyal to Blendtec is because they have no quarrel with the fact that we tell people they do NOT need to buy a fancy, shmancy blender to make green smoothies.
When International Green Smoothie Day launched last year, we were actually approached by another company who offered to sponsor us. We politely declined when we were told that their sponsorship was conditional upon us removing all traces of garage sale/hardware store blenders from our site and instead telling people that they must buy their fancy, shmancy blender to make green smoothies.
Pshaw!
Money should NOT get in the way of your health!
Here’s a BIG Green Smoothie toast to Blendtec, and to Osterizer-uses everywhere and here’s to making due with what you’ve got when you’ve got it!
Because grass roots grow, Baby, and you’ve gotta start somewhere.
Now, I’m off this soap box and outta here to take on the day!
Charmed by chard,
Green Smoothie Queen

International Green Smoothie Day is Coming!
Written by Tera on August 11, 2009 – -Okay, Divas! Prepare yourself for the greatest green extravaganza we’ve ever given. For the next week your friendly neighborhood Diva blog is going to be hijacked by the Green Smoothie Queen who is the smoooooth operator of some exciting plans for our upcoming International Green Smoothie Day on August 15th.
YOU can get onboard and join the celebrations and help make this an AMAZING event! Here’s the blog entry “The Queen” posted on The Green Smoothie Blog! We’ll be keeping you posted here, so stay tuned for some chard and parsley-inspired adventures!
Oooooh sweet, Swiss chard! I can’t believe our International Green Smoothie Day will be kicking off in just a few days! For those of you who haven’t yet registered, it’s not too late to jump on board for this adventure! You can sign up at our Green Smoothie Queen site.
When you check out that page, you’ll notice a whole lot of logo lovin’ going on. That’s because we’ve had scads of enthusiastic contributors joining in to help us with this event. Many of you are likely wondering:
How Can I Win That Spanky New Blendtec Blender??

Well, my little lambs quarter lover, I’ll tell you all about it.
You see, the tradition with our Green Smoothie celebrations is that we give away a Blendtec Blendter (sometimes two) to the person who makes the biggest impact on their social community. This program is all about making health and vitality accessible to EVERYONE! It’s about sharing wisdom, not profits. It’s about health, not Hallmark!
We’ve very lucky to be sponsored by Blendtec and Excalibur and we want to make sure that the winners of these prizes feel honored to be given these gifts! That’s why we invite participants of our Green Smoothie Challenge to host a Green Smoothie Party of some kind. The last time we did this event for St. Patrick’s Day, our winner was from Mexico, and she shared Green Smoothies with her entire school of elementary-aged children! You can check out the pictures and the submissions of our other winners here! We requested the most creative Green Smoothie photo, and the classiest Green Smoothie photo, too! We had all kinds of things and it was REALLY exciting to see everyone’s contributions. Our winner recorded a fantastic video and it was really an exciting thing to see.
Last year’s International Green Smoothie Day winner invited as many friends as she could over to her house. Cats and dogs included, the numbers were high enough that she won the grand prize! Another winner brought little handouts to work and shared green smoothies with her co-workers!
We’re not asking for the impossible, we just want to see some initiative and inspiration! Show us that you’re out there making a difference and we’ll acknowledge you for your efforts with accolades and express packages in the mail!
We have TWO grand prizes to give away this year. The Blendtec blender AND a 9-tray Excalibur dehydrator! There are LOADS of other treats, goodies, DVDs, books, ebooks, coaching and all kinds of surprises contributed by friends and associates, and those will be chosen by a draw. All participants of the program will be entered in the draw, but those who contribute to the Powder Room forum, those who send in recipes, videos, etc. will get their name thrown into the hat a few more times.
Contribution counts. What are YOU doing to get involved, inspired and sharing the good news with your community?
That’s what Green Smoothie Day all about!
If you’ve not yet read our announcement page, it’s worth checking out. Not just because it does a rather fine job of summing up my view on life as a raw foodist, but because it explains the purpose behind this event!
My garden is billowing with Swiss chard, fresh parsley and all the ingredients I need to make the best green smoothies ever!Prepare yourselves for the adventure! Stock up and get your blenders ready and revved for action! Saturday we kick off our International Green Smoothie Day Celebrations and want YOU on board making it all happen with us!
Okay, Sparkle Puff, my to do list is calling, but I’m excited to have kick started this Green Smoothie extravaganza and look forward to hearing from you! Just so you know, all Green Smoothie Day contest entries need to be submitted in the Powder Room this year! If you have any questions about how to get started and join in the fun, then contact me at:
