The Green Smoothie Halloween Howl – Our Contest Winners!
Written by admin on November 15, 2010 – -- by Stacey Terry

I was abducted by aliens!
Whisked away by wild dingoes!
Hi-jacked by guerilla hillbillies!!
(sigh)… Oh, the best laid plans of mice and Queen-co-ordinators!
Okay, so maaaaybe none of those excuses are true… though at least the last one has an itty bitty grain of accuracy. My passion for green smoothie work met its match when it tried to compete with my passion for rockabilly last week and I found myself rehearsing and working on Old No. 3 Trio songs more often than spending time in front of the computer. My apologies for not bringing you the Halloween contest winners sooner, but if it makes you feel any better we had a couple of great gigs on the weekend. hehe!
Our 10-Day Healthy Halloween Howl contests drew to a close on November 7th. It was a freaky and fun challenge, and we received some great positive feedback and helpful comments from folks. We love when health can be the focus of ANY holiday! And just wait until you see some of the pictures! It makes me TOTALLY excited every time Keely sends me a gem! You’re going to love checking out our winners below! Read more »

In Honor of International Green Smoothie Day We’re Thinking BiG: “Believe in Green”
Written by Tera on August 16, 2010 – -Yesterday was officially International Green Smoothie Day and I am delighted to report that our Believe in Green program has lifted off.
We’re starting the event with a fabulous interview with the “creator” of green smoothies, Victoria Boutenko. I love Victoria (who doesn’t?!) and it’s been a pleasure to watch her skyrocket to success over the last few years with the popularity of “green smoothies.” We felt it important to pay special tribute to her work and so she was the key speaker for our preparatory day.
In that interview with me she shared some of her unusual personal habits, which I absolutely love, and if I could adopt them myself I would. Unfortunately skinny dipping isn’t looked favorably upon in downtown Montreal.
I’ve had the pleasure of connecting with Victoria on many occasions and this was really a special treat!
You can still access this interview at any time by signing up for Believe in Green.
We set a target of $10,000 in donations, and we’ve nearly reached the $6000 mark by now. It’s exciting, encouraging and inspiring to watch the numbers rise! Thank you so much for all those who are helping to spread the word and make this happen.
Last night at around 6pm Eastern, Robyn Openshaw, also known as: Green Smoothie Girl, came to the stage to share her helpful information on how to get the kids on board healthy eating, and how to get the whole family started on a healthier path to whole foods no matter where you’re starting from.
Robyn is a single mom of 4 kids (3 of them are teenagers, so I TOTALLY take my hat off to this woman!) and she’s self-employed. In the moments when I think I’m crazy to be doing the things I do, I think of her and remember there are crazier.
All kidding aside, I LOVE Robyn’s work and think her get-real approach to raw food is the perfect message for so many people who struggle with a 100% ideal.
I need to give BIG thanks to Blendtec who is sponsoring this event with a fancy, shmancy, brand new Blendter to the winner of our Ripple Maker award. Every year for International Green Smoothie Day we award one (sometimes two) lucky participants with a new blender. All they have to do is host a green smoothie event or do something to get the word out about green smoothies. The person who touches the most lives with their event will win the blender!
It’s not the easiest task in the world, but for a prize like this, we want to honor it with a worthy endeavor to make a difference out there. It’s a thrill to know that seniors’ centers, and elementary schools in Mexico have become the stompin’ grounds for green smoothies because of this event.
If you’ve not yet signed up, you can still access ALL the interviews when you come onboard. We set a target of $10,000 in donations and until we reach our goal, we’re going to keep the gates open! We busted the $6000 mark, so all we need is 400 more people to join us for this green smoothie event and we’ll be home free.
Thanks so much for your support of this event!
Love and leafy greens,
Tera
p.s.
Oh my! I didn’t even mention that 100% of the money we generate for this event goes to the Lower East Side Girls’ Club!

BiG: Believe in Green: 10 Day Challenge, 10 Big Thinkers (August 15-24th 2010)
Written by Fiona on August 4, 2010 – -Dear Passionate People-Lover,
With all this talk about oil spills and ozone layers it can be a pretty overwhelming to talk about “saving the planet”. Especially when you consider the fact that so many of us are struggling to save ourselves! The fact is, the rates of cancer, diabetes, heart disease, ADD, autism and infertility are rising as fast as the rates of green house gas emissions!
This is no coincidence!
It’s no accident that in a world of soda pop, plastic wrap, and microwaveable meals, we’ve started to see a lot more diabetes, arthritis, obesity and even cancer taking the lives of the people we love. Let’s look at the facts:
- World Watch Magazine reported that over 50% of annual greenhouse gas emissions come from animals raised for food.
- A UN Report supports the fastest solution to reducing ghg emissions is transition to a plant-based diet.
- Eating a plant-based diet dramatically reduces the risk of cancer, diabetes, heart disease and obesity.
Essentially, if we add up all the cars and factories and things that give off toxic gases it still doesn’t beat the greenhouse gas emissions coming from the cows, pigs, chickens, goats and other animals we use for “food.” And the bottom line is that if we stopped using these animals for food, we would improve our overall health and well-being.
I see a win-win situation happening here!
Maybe before we start saving up for solar panels, we could sprout clover and just start eating more fruits and vegetables? Maybe instead of spending millions of dollars in environmental debates, we could plant Swiss chard and wheat grass in our window sills? Read more »

Nettles – The Holistic Health Hero of Our Wastelands
Written by Fiona on July 29, 2010 – -by Fiona Hollis

Nettles, nettles everywhere! ‘Ouchy’ weeds that grow in and on anything. Resilient and persistent, nettles grow tall and proud in almost any location. This mysterious plant has some of the best security systems in place, designed to protect their precious leaves with millions of tiny syringes loaded with poison. A veritable electric fence of defense surrounds this plant. Who would have thought this needle wielding warrior could be such a holistic health hero!
Aside from being a super plant – vitamin and mineral packed with many, many healing and therapeutic values – nettles are used to make paper, dye, rope, linen like fabric, and insect repellent. A green that serves many a need.
In England, there is an annual nettle eating competition at a pub called, The Bottle Inn. I called and asked them about the art of eating raw nettles – it seems that as the sting is only on the upper side of the leaf – the trick is to fold the sides of the nettle in, and then roll the nettle up – so there is no upper side exposed to the mouth. I was a little confused, “Doesn’t the sting escape when chewed?” I asked… “Yes, sometimes - your mouth goes kind of numb,” was the reply. If that option sounds a little unnecessarily traumatic, – why not make a smoothie, juice or tea? Read more »
