Four foods for eye health

This week’s focus is all about the eyes. Let’s take a peek at what foods are beneficial in keeping the windows to your soul crystal clear, sparkling and self-healing.
Carrots have long been associated with eye health and vision improvement. While the beta carotene found in carrots is a great support for healthy eyes, there are other foods that have [tweet_dis]valuable properties to help keep our peepers healthy and looking their best.[/tweet_dis]

#1 – Herbal Teas

Sipping herbal tea is one of the easiest and most effective ways to provide nourishment and support to our eyes. Here are some well-known herbs for eye health.

Eyebright

Eyebright, the name says it all,  drinking eyebright  tea can help with a variety of complaints including dryness, fatigue, inflammation in and around the eyes as well as difficulty with focusing during long hours of work in front of a computer screen.
In addition to sipping eyebright herbal tea, a solution can be made and cooled to use as an eye compress by wetting a cotton pad or clean piece of muslin and placing on the eyes for 10-15 minutes.

Goldenseal

This champion healing herb has been used for centuries to treat a variety of infections and wounds, and is still one of the most popular go-to herbs. Cooled tea bags or a cloth soaked in this tea can also be applied to the eyes to helps soothe the eyes and clear up infections and inflammation.

Bilberry

Bilberry has been used for centuries as a defence against many vision issues and can be most helpful with light sensitivity. If you experience night blindness or find your eyes slow to focus when lighting changes quickly, sipping on bilberry herbal tea may be the perfect solution for you.

#2 – Dark green, leafy vegetables

To prevent eye diseases such as macular degeneration—a condition which causes progressive damage to the retina, resulting in a gradual loss of vision—dark green vegetables, such as kale, spinach and dark green lettuce including romaine are essential. They contain lutein and zeaxanthin, two important nutrients that have antioxidant functions, helping to prevent cell damage.

#3 – Broccoli

This hearty cruciferous vegetable in addition to containing lutein and zeaxanthin is high in vitamin C—all of which are crucial in good eye health and function.

#4 – Sweet potatoes and yams

Bright orange fruits and vegetables such as pumpkin, sweet potatoes, yams, apricots and of course carrots, get their colour from beta carotene, a precursor of vitamin A, which helps promote healthy vision and assists how the eyes adjust to light.

So there you have it, a veritable feast of beautiful foods and herbs all filled to the brim with eye health and beauty benefits. Bon appetit as you eat your way to sharper vision with a twinkle in your eye.
