“Earthing” – What It Is And Why It’s Good For You!

By Chere Harbridge

Do you remember when the days of summer seemed endless – and you would spend the whole day outside, often running barefoot in the grass or sand?  Did you ever have times when you would lie in the grass and stare up at the clouds, trying to figure out what shapes you could see…..or in the night-time staring in awe at the stars?  I do remember those days!  Did any of us have any inkling that ‘barefoot in the grass’  was actually good for us? I certainly did not!  All I knew was that walking  barefoot felt lovely, and lying in the grass staring up at the sky, day or night, was, well, kind of awe-inspiring.

According to recent scientific studies, ‘barefoot in the grass’ now has an official name!  It’s called “Earthing, or Grounding” and it turns out it is REALLY good for us!  Studies are showing that the earth maintains a negative electrical potential. When we are in contact with the earth – that is, walking, sitting, or lying down on the earth’s surface, the electrons from the earth ground our bodies, inducing favorable physiological changes. Living in direct contact with the earth can have antioxidant effects that are beneficial to us in many ways.

Our immune system functions best when our body has the right amount of electrons coursing through it.  These same electrons are freely provided to us just by connecting our bodies to the earth – whether walking barefoot or sitting or lying directly on the earth’s surface.

Grounding or Earthing simply means connecting yourself with the earth – whether it be grass, dirt, or even concrete – especially when damp.  While no one is yet saying that earthing is a ‘treatment’ or a ‘cure’, studies are showing that this practice is vital in maintaining health. When we allow ourselves to spend some time ‘earthing’  on a regular basis, we can help to radically reduce inflammation in our bodies, which is known to cause premature aging and a host of chronic diseases.

So, if you’re not already, get outside! Take your shoes off!  Lie back in the grass and study the clouds or stars!  Not only will this bring a renewed sense of wonder about the beautiful earth we live on, but it’s actually good for you!
