Green Smoothies In Sickness And In Health – Week 2 of Miriam Campbell’s Journey  Continues!

by Miriam Campbell
This week I managed to find the antidote to social pressure, food temptation and avoid the one true challenge I expected to face this week….by falling ill with the flu! Actual influenza as diagnosed by Dr Google. I must have caught some gold plated gold pass germs while enjoying Warbirds over Wanaka last weekend. Want to hear more of my sob story? You know you do!

Cancelled Plans and unintentional water fasts

Following a wonderful weekend of Warbirds over Wanaka, I awoke at 3am on Easter Monday wracked with pain and nausea. I lay awake in pain (but not nearly as bad as when I got appendicitis 7 years ago) for hours, before falling into a feverish, fitful sleep. When my partner awoke, I had to admit there was something wrong, and in a small voice, I asked him if we could please cancel our overnight boat trip to the picturesque Doubtful Sound. He conceded that it was for the best, and immediately celebrated by spending half our trip refund on Lego. I really do love that guy (I am also a lego fan, so it worked out alright for me as well).

Cancelling the boat trip meant I didn’t have to worry about food for the two meals while on board. In the end I didn’t have to worry about food for a few days! I spent the next two days doing absolutely nothing. I participated in two inadvertent water fasts on Monday and Tuesday, having absolutely no appetite. It helps when the most exertion is taking a shower and ThomasSm 197x130pushing the page direction buttons on my kindle. I smashed through about five of Sue Grafton’s alphabet series novels while I was unwell, and my brother’s dog, Thomas Mark, kept me company while everyone else escaped the house and exposure to my germs.

Wednesday, I felt a bit better. Therefore it was time for my partner to get sick.

Introducing my family to “green” smoothies

So once I was actually feeling the urge to consume edible material, I decided to take the plunge and attempt to introduce some of my family to “green” smoothies. The test subject of choice was my niece. She does not do well with fruit with an intact peel so instead of a green smoothie, I made a “pink” smoothie with banana, frozen mixed berries and kale. Kale was a new ingredient for her also. Here she is being brave enough for me to photograph her and put her on the internet.

AnnabelSm 201x198She liked it! Usually she is a “yoghurt and berries” kind of smoothie person, but by using the banana, she said “You don’t even need the yoghurt”. I only poured her half serving to begin with, but she had more. Her Mum even tried some too! I was feeling so well, I even had some.

Later in the week, I had an impulse, and added a whole lemon (minus the nibby bits on the end – I don’t know what they are called, but I chopped them off) to my apple and spinach smoothie. This one was very green and “looked healthy” according to my niece. I really liked the refreshing zing the lemon gave to my already tried and true smoothie recipe. I am totally going to try that again.

7 days of Green Smoothies to go!

LegoSm160x242
I managed to get in my three days of only green smoothies near the end of the week, once we had returned home, to build the Star Wars Millenium Falcon out of Lego.

Next week is the big shebang! 7 days in a row! It is going to be awesome. I am feeling so much better compared to earlier in the week, and am therefore super confident. I plan to make a big green smoothie that will provide breakfast and lunch, and attempt some of the “savoury” smoothie recipes provided in the BE Green resources for my dinner. Dinner time is when I miss what I would term “normal food”, and have a hankering for something a bit less sweet.

Thanks for reading and tune in next time to see if I like them!
