What To Do When Your House Crowds You Out Instead of Welcomes You In

I recently heard a speaker talk about the difference between a house and a home, how “A house is made by hands, but a home is made by hearts.” During this talk, Vanessa Stewart’s BE Clean clutter busting program came to mind. She says that the cleanliness and organization of your home is a direct reflection of your life, your health, your well-being and your thoughts!

Start By Taking Inventory of Each Room

In her book, The Simple Living Guide, Janet Luhrs talks about a simple technique for seeing each room with a new perspective. This can help you determine what ‘things’ or areas might be holding trapped energy.

Follow these steps:

  1. Schedule 30 minutes of time for yourself, preferably when your house is quiet and empty; take a seat in the living room.
  2. Sit quietly, take several deep breaths, and close your eyes for about five minutes. Just take time to follow your breathing.
  3. Open your eyes and slowly take a look around the room; spend time looking at each item and asking yourself, what do you really see? Is it pleasant? Why is it there? What would that table or shelf look like if that item wasn’t there?
  4. As you look from object to object, take note of how you feel right at that moment. Does the item make you feel happy and peaceful, or burdened and anxious?
  5. Do this type of inventory exercise in each room of your house; it will help you see your spaces and your belongings with fresh eyes. Sometimes seeing things in a different way helps you realize that they no longer serve you and it’s time to let them go.

Welcome the Spring with a Clean and Clutter-Free Home!

I LOVE the timing of the new BE Clean program, beginning again on Apri19th!  Spring has only just begun – what a perfect time to get cleaned out – inwardly and outwardly – so that you can stop wasting energy on clutter and start spending more time for yourself!

Just imagine kicking off the summer with no “stuff”, no “gook” (whatever your definition of stuff and gook may be)!

Did you know that clutter is a manifestation of your inability to decide? Indecision robs you of your self-confidence. There’s no clarity, purpose, focus or drive. You’re just stuck.

And, if you’ve been doing it for a while, your home and environment will start to reflect this indecision and keep you pinned in a state of feeling drained and unproductive.
