declutterLooking For A Way Out Of Clutter?  Vanessa Stewart, Our Very Own Clutter Buster, Can Help!

~ interview by Donna Kasuska

Piles of paper, shoes on the floor in the mudroom, narrow pathways in the basement, that six-foot radius around your teenager’s laundry hamper, or knickknacks peeking through a layer of dust.  These and other disturbing mental images come to mind at the mere mention of the word clutter.  Yet some symptoms of clutter are much more subtle.  In fact it’s entirely possible that our clutter problems are all in our heads.

Since we’ve been focusing mostly on toxicity and all those invisible hazards, you may be wondering why we would switch to the more obvious topic of clutter, after all, our clutter is right there in front of us, clearly visible to everyone.  It reminds us every day that we should do something about it, and quite frankly we don’t like to be reminded.

However, today we are speaking with an expert who is not here to remind us about a nagging problem that we already have, she’s here to help us understand why we have clutter and to talk about the relationship between our outer world and our inner world.

Today I am speaking with Vanessa Stewart.  Vanessa lives in the beautiful Pacific Northwest.  She’s an experienced Feng Shui consultant and advisor offering classes, workshops and consultations in Washington State and across the U.S. and Canada.

Additionally, she’s director of the Seattle Division of the Feng Shui Academy, founded to provide quality education to the public.  Vanessa is also certified as a professional organizer with Clear and Simple Professional Organizers and has more than 18 years of clutter-busting, abundance-boosting experience.

Vanessa specializes in helping people clear the excess clutter out of their living and working environments.  She loves assisting people in making their homes more beautiful and supportive of their individual needs.  Above all, Vanessa believes that you can make the decluttering process fun and easy.  She has more spunk, spark and pep than you would expect from such an organized lady. She lives what she teaches and has created the life she wants for herself, and she’s here to help us do it too.

Here are a few key points from Vanessa’s Interview:

  • But really what clutter’s all about is delayed decisions and delayed actions.

  • So, clutter basically is the ability to decide in the moment whether you want to keep something, and if you do, where is it going to live.

  • So any of those things (children’s toys, a gift that doesn’t rock your world, children’s art kept from when they were toddlers, etc.)  can be considered clutter if they’re lying in piles, don’t have a home, you don’t use them, or you really just don’t even know what’s there.

  • …everyone has clutter somewhere.  Some in great degrees and some in small degrees.  But if we always just keep an eye out for what we love, need and use, it’s real easy to pick the clutter out and let it go.

  • I think asking yourself regularly, what’s in the way of, me doing, having or being what I want and everything that I need to serve my life so I can live it fully, then that’s a good way to recognize what’s clutter and what isn’t.
