How One Chronic Candy Lover Achieved Personal Success With The 21 Day Green Smoothie Detox

Hello Green Smoothie Queen(s)!

I have been wanting to write this out every since I did the 21 Day Green Smoothie Detox.  I finally decided to make time to write this out today.

My mom asked me to do the 21 Day Detox with her. I told her I would give it some thought.  My mom and I stumbled upon Robyn Openshaw’s book when she purchased a Blendtec at Costco (in the US).

About a year before that, I tried the 3 Day Challenge.The 3 Day was my first introduction to green smoothies.  That got me started on them.

I wasn’t really consistent but had them for breakfast from time to time.  I incorporated 1 quart of green smoothies into my diet and my family’s diet (well, a pint for the kids) after reading Robyn’s book.  At some point, I stopped drinking the smoothies, but I had started a garden.  So,  when my mom brought up the 21 Day Detox, I decided to just go for it.

I cannot tell you how much the 21 Day Detox changed my life.  Now, I will guess that my story isn’t going to sound like a typical success story to you, but for ME it has been a success. 

Starting Out – Week One

I started out with the 7 Day Prep week.  I bought everything I would need for the first 3 days and got going.  I posted on the forums and turned in my journals for the first week or so.

That was the first and only time I shopped for the 21 Day Detox.

My posting on the forum dwindled, I stopped turning in my journals, and I only read the first few daily e-mails.  I did, however, listen to the Welcome teleseminar.

Tera was absolutely amazing. There was so much freedom in hearing that it isn’t productive to think of things in terms of what I “can’t” have, what I “can’t” do, etc.  I decided to focus on what I would do.

To save money, I decided to buy the produce that was in season and least expensive and it turned out I had tons of collard greens and kale in my garden!  My mom, who has an amazing garden, also shared her chard and other greens with me.  I also decided that I would not forbid any food.

I dealt with my biggest weakness by – giving myself choices!

candy cravingsMy weakness, so to speak, is sugar.  My favorite thing to do is get all cozy in bed and watch TV while eating candy… and lots of it.  I made the decision that I would continue with that habit until I TRULY felt willing to let go of it.  I still eat candy every day.

I have been on restrictive diets before and, with the way I work, if something is forbidden I deal with it for a while, but eventually I binge and become bitter at whatever (the diet, a trainer, etc.) “made” me deprive myself.  Of course, nobody can really make me deprive myself.  So, I made the choice to eat candy every day if I wanted.  The one thing I did commit to, however, was to drink 2 quarts of green smoothies before eating anything else during the day.

So far, this may not sound like SUCCESS, but for me it was HUGE.  I have come so far and honestly, allowing myself candy has been a large part of my growth. I have been able to practice being gentle with myself.  When I wake up feeling not as great (and I know it is from the nighttime candy) I observe how I feel but refuse to judge myself.  I made a choice.  No blame, no guilt, only choices.

Benefits that have amazed me!

With all of that background being said, I would like to share with you how the green smoothies have benefited me. Most days, I’m not hungry until around dinner time or late afternoon.  I feel absolutely amazing.  I no longer feel like I need a nap in the afternoons.  I get a TON done around the house (compared to before).  I am emotionally available to my kids and husband.  I feel better about getting out and being social.  My skin is much clearer and bright.

I wouldn’t have been at all surprised with these results if I had also cut out junk food, but I am completely shocked at how much JUST ADDING 2 quarts of green smoothie per day has changed my life for the better.

I plan to continue on and, when I’m ready, let go of the sugar.  I don’t crave sugar nearly as much as I did.  It is actually sometimes uncomfortable for me to even eat it.  I was actually thinking just last night that I am ready to take the step of moving the candy from my bedside table to the kitchen cupboard to make it not quite so easy for me.  Still, I’m not ready to say goodbye, but I’m getting there.
