Setting Solstice Intentions

By Alison Ramsay

This weekend marks the arrival of the Winter Solstice in the northern hemisphere and the Summer Solstice in the southern hemisphere.

The word solstice comes from the Latin words sol (sun) and sistere (to stand still), and is an actual celestial event. At the solstices the sun stands still before changing its direction depending on what part of the world you are in. In winter, it marks the shortest day, before you begin to move into longer and longer days, or into the light. In summer, it is when the sun is highest in the sky, marks the longest day of the year and the beginning of summer.

Wherever you are, it is the perfect time to reflect, regroup, take inventory of your life, and set some new intentions moving forward. You can do this in a little ceremony, ritual, personal reflection, or a quiet moment in nature with yourself and your heart. Whatever feels good and right to you is perfect, but remember to make it nourishing, positive, and celebratory!

The sun is the source of all light and life on this planet and has been the basis for ancient world religions and timeless spirituality. That beautiful ball of fire is not only integral to our physical health and the physical health of every being, plant or animal, but is also a powerful player in our spiritual development. This weekend take a moment to honour the sun, rejoice in its life-giving presence. Set some kick-butt goals for your life moving forward, put them out there, and have a party!
