How to Core a Pineapple in Four Easy Steps

By Kelly Marra

I am a tropical fruit girl through and through. Nothing tastes better to me than fresh, ripe pineapples, mangos and coconuts when I’m traveling in the tropics. At home, to feel like I’m on vacation, I used to buy pre-cut and cored pineapple to save time and money. Since I’ve learned how to cut and core a pineapple with as little waste as possible though, I always buy it whole and you will too once you learn my pineapple tricks!

Pineapple Fun Facts

Pineapples are loaded with Vitamin C and an enzyme called bromelian which is great for digestion. It’s also good at suppressing coughs and loosening mucus, making this fresh ripe fruit my go-to food to eat when I’ve got a cold.

But here’s the thing, bromelian is found in the greatest quantity in the stem or core of the pineapple. So be sure to chew on the core or juice it to get all the cold fighting and digestive-aid benefits.

These delicious fruits are low in calories, high in fiber, vitamins and minerals, making pineapple a perfect weight loss food.

How to Cut a Pineapple

Firmly grasp the leaves/top of the pineapple and twist until the whole top comes off. If you’ve got a green thumb, you can put the top in water for a few days and it’ll grow roots. Then plant the top in soil and in a few years you’ll have grown a pineapple of your own!

Lay the pineapple on a cutting board and cut the rind off the top and bottom. Using the flat surface that you just created, stand the pineapple up and cut it in half vertically.

Lay one of your pineapple halves back down on the cutting board, flat side down. Cut the pineapple in half vertically again. Turn the pineapple over so that you can easily cut out the core of the fruit. Then, cut the pineapple in half vertically again. Repeat these steps for the other pineapple half.

Now you’ve got eight pieces of pineapple with the core removed, time to take off the rind. Working one piece at a time lay the pineapple on your cutting board with the rind down. Hold the pineapple flesh in one hand while you run the blade of your knife between the pineapple flesh and the rind.

There you have it! A beautifully cut and cored pineapple that is ready to be eaten!
