Here’s a Quick Way to Save Money at the Cosmetics Counter

By Kelly Marra

The local beauty counter may stock it’s shelves full of pretty packages, but most of those products are loaded with chemicals that strip your skin of its natural glow. Keep those pesky chemicals off your body! Learn how easy it is to make your own customized natural body lotion with this easy DIY project.

DIY 100% Edible Lotion

I’ve been plagued with dry AND oily skin my whole life. Life used to be complicated and my bathroom counter cluttered with different lotions and creams, ones that worked on my oily face and others that worked best on my dry legs. I’ve cleared away the clutter and so can you, with an easy DIY natural body lotion.

My little son often gnaws on my arms, hands and whatever else he can get in his mouth. I feel so much better about him getting a little natural lotion in his system than lotion that’s full of chemicals and synthetic ingredients. The lotion that I used to use had all sorts of things in it like sodium lauroamphoactate, citric acid, silicylic acid, steric acid and the very vague word fragrance. No thanks, I’ll pass on those!

Making your own body lotion is super easy. Plus, you’ll feel good about what you’re putting on your body because you get to choose the ingredients! If you want it to be organic, choose organic ingredients. If you want to add fragrances, add essential oils.

All Natural Body Lotion Recipe

I love this body lotion recipe because it’s quick to make and really only requires 4 ingredients. It’s also easy to alter the recipe to suit your tastes and needs.

  • ½ Cup olive oil
  • 2 Tablespoons beeswax
  • 10-20 drops essential oils (Lavender, vanilla and calendula are good options)
  • 1 Cup tepid water
  • Clean, dry jars, enough to hold 1 ½ Cups

Directions: Start by combining the olive oil with the beeswax. Melt the beeswax and olive oil mixture over indirect heat, either in a double boiler or in a heatproof cup in a pan of simmering water. When the wax is melted, remove the mixture from the heat and stir in the essential oils, if you’re using them.

Warm up your cup of water by pouring it into a blender and letting the blender run for a bit. This warms up the water and also the walls of the blender which will stop the beeswax from sticking to them.

Once the water is warm, pour it into a cup and set it aside. Pour in the oil/beeswax mixture and turn the blender on low. Add the warm water slowly in a steady stream while the blender is running. Stop the blender and scrape the sides as needed until all the water is incorporated.

Move the lotion to clean dry jars right away. Leave the lids off the jars until your DIY natural lotion cools. Try using other oils, mixing oils, or adding more or less beeswax to create a lotion that works best for you.
