Is Your Drug Store Shampoo Making You Sick?
Three Ways to Lavish Your Hair Naturally

by Nadine Artemis of Living Libations

Many of the body care products you purchase at the store contain harmful ingredients like sodium lauryl sulfate. Ingredients these days are even hidden by tricky names so you might not be able to identify the little culprits, even if you are trying to read the label carefully. Apparently shampooing your hair with normal shampoo is like processing the amount of nitrates that are in a pound of bacon.  And all of this goes into your liver.  And then your body has to deal with it. Did you have any idea that washing your hair, could be overwhelming your liver and even negatively influencing your hormones?

Never fear though, because we have Nadine Artemis here, to give you some super simple tips and tricks for making your own body care products, with ingredients you might already have laying around in your fridge and cupboards. Nadine is one of the featured speakers of the upcoming WISH summit. She is a gifted aromacologist and visionary who gathers and works with the purest ingredients and the intelligence embodied in plant juice to create a revolutionary line of essential oils, elixirs, serums and perfumed poetry for health, skincare and beauty. Nadine seeks to inspire people to rethink the traditional concept of beauty with her paradigm of “Renegade Beauty.” The following are simple things you can concoct in your very own kitchen or bathroom, to lavish more love on your hair.

Oil Treatment for Healthy Hair

Oil Treatment for Healthy HairA great thing to do for the hair is an oil treatment.

You can leave  it on for the night if you’re able, or you can just apply the oil before you shampoo. Oil really helps to saponify, which means to lather the shampoo.  It also creates a beautiful thickening for the hair, and  it helps keep the hair free of split ends.

If you have a dry itchy scalp or any scalp conditions, essential oils added to the oil are really wonderful.  Because they’re antifungal and antibacterial.  So simple ones like tea tree, cedar, and peppermint. I recommend using seabuckthorn oil because it really adds shine to the hair.

Herbal Infusions to Boost Your Shampoo

Nettle Infusion for Healthy HairIt’s worth investing in a very high quality beautiful shampoo. Good shampoo can be very expensive. Make sure it has no lauryl sulfates of any kind. By adding an herbal tea infusion, you can put happy, healthy herbs into your body, add beautiful shine, and extend the life of your shampoo dramatically!

The best herbs for the hair include:

  • Black Walnut
  • Chaga
  • Nettle
  • Horsetail

As far as water to herb ratios are concerned, I do not measure, but I suggest combining two to three ounces of herb matter to a couple liters of boiling water in a big pot. It doesn’t have to be exact. While steeping, get a mason jar and add one or two ounces of the herb you have chosen to the empty jar. Take your boiling water, pour it into the jar, put a lid on it and let that sit overnight. (As a side note while steeping the tea you can also put a towel over your head and allow the steam to create a Swedish facial effect!)

The next step is to separate the leaves from the liquid and mix some of liquid with about 1 tsp high quality shampoo. This should be done per use, do not add to the whole container as it can cause the shampoo to go off. This extends the life of the shampoo as well as helping you get nutrients infused into your scalp and hair. After you’ve used what you need for the shampoo, the remaining tea infusion can be drank throughout the day. Some of the tea can also be used for a honey treatment.

Honey for a Healthier Shampoo

Honey Treatment for Hair

You can make a lather with the same tea and honey.

It is beautiful for the hair to get the honey into it!

Use the honey treatment after you have shampooed. It’s very conditioning.

Mix honey and your herbal infusion, until it is thin enough to apply it to the hair. Let sit for a few moments, and then rinse it out.  Then your hair is ultra natural at the end of it!

You can apply your high quality conditioner after the honey treatment.
