– by Nadine Artemis

The following conversation comes from an interview I did recently with Nadine Artemis. I thought you might appreciate checking these out for yourself:

“One great thing to do for the hair is an oil treatment.  And this you can leave on for the night if you’re able, or if you just put oil on before you shampoo, oil really helps to saponify, which means to lather the shampoo.  It does really create a beautiful thickening for the hair. It also helps the hair to be free of split ends.  So that’s a great thing to do.

If you have a dry itchy scalp or any scalp conditions, essential oils added to the oil are really wonderful, because they’re antifungal and antibacterial.  Simple ones like tea tree, cedar, peppermint, and I also like sea buckthorn oil because it does really add shine to the hair.  You can add that in before you shampoo.

Why Is Sodium Lauryl Sulfate Something We Should Avoid?

natural hair care“If it isn’t sodium lauryl sulphate it’s some other kind of lauryl sulphate.  I mean marketing has gotten a bit clever.  There are more ingredients out there, but it’s all the same thing.  It’s a very toxic ingredient.  It has a lot of nitrates in it.  You know apparently shampooing your hair with normal shampoo is like processing the amount of nitrates that are like in a pound of bacon.  And all of this goes into your liver.  And then your body has to deal with it.

“I used to have this expression “let your perfume be your medicine”.  I still have that expression, but what we found out just a week ago is that there’s an actual word from ancient Greece that means using your perfume as your medicine.  I didn’t know it was like a literal concept.  I was just playing with that Hippocrates quote.  It’s related to the word thyme, the name of the herb.  And it’s the art of using perfumes as your medicine.

“We have all these beautiful plants and these botanicals and, you know these active ingredients.  We can use these to wash our hair, wash our floors, clean our counters.  Literally smell beautiful.  You know, take care of things like skin in a way that actually can add to our hormones and help our livers function. Then what we have is the exact opposite right now where we have a plethora of chemical concoctions that could disrupt the hormones, disrupt the functioning of the liver.  It’s just really neat that we have these two very contrasting opportunities before us in the beauty realm.

Your Skin Excretes a Pound of Waste Every Day

natural hair care“I’m always amazed that the body, the skin, is excreting over a pound of waste every day. We don’t really see it coming out of our skin.  Beauty care is about being beautiful, but it’s also about helping the systems of the body function, like the lymph system.  If we’re just glooping on things that are, you know, sort of clogging things up, like the lymph nodes and the liver, then ultimately I don’t think it can really be that beautiful.

“It’s about a lot more than just self-pampering and wrinkle-prevention.  I’m thinking about the massive amount of breast cancer that’s going on.  I think it’s got to be related a bit to what’s been going on with the modern beauty industry for women too – you know it’s like the lymph nodes and the breast tissue, and how a lot of like the deodorants or bras are just sort of cutting off and clogging up that whole area.  Whereas you could really be working with clothing and deodorant that is actually healthy for the hormones and for the lymph nodes!  What if we put a perfume on and it was actually contributing to the health of our immune system.  And you know it can be that way!

More Tips For Naturally Healthy Hair

natural hair care“Just simply brushing your hair upside down is great, and really trying to avoid the hair dryer is awesome. Once the hair’s dry if you just use warm rollers you get the hair joined like you would with a hair dryer.  And that way you can just take five minutes.  And then you don’t have to use the hair dryer, which is not so good for the hair.  I know that some people can’t avoid it.  But if you could that would be great.  And then just brushing the hair upside down. In the summer, just letting the sun dry the hair is a really great thing.”

Tera:    Why upside down?

“It’s good for the lymph system.  And I think that it just helps to stimulate the scalp.  A lot of people have scalp issues just because there’s not enough blood circulating there.  There’s lots of reasons.  It could be Candida or different fungal issues.  But sometimes the scalp just needs a little more care through brushing.”

The Best Kind of Brush For Your Hair

“Natural brushes are good.  I have just a natural brush and a comb.  There’s different qualities and there are different bristles.  You just have to figure out which is best for the type of hair that you have when making a run through.  I know it’s hard.  A lot of the natural brushes won’t really go through my hair.  But I just find one that has the right spacing.

natural hair careGet a good body brush and a good hair brush. Even in body brushes you have to check.  Because even at a health food store they sometimes have the synthetic bristles.  You want to get a natural bristle to be using on the skin.”
