Fat, Sick & Nearly Dead

I’ll say it at the top: the documentary Fat, Sick, and Nearly Dead gets “two thumbs up” from me. Watch it and be amazed. The movie chronicles the juice fast journeys of three people: the filmmaker Joe Cross, Siong Norte, and the you-have-to-see-it-to-believe-it Phil Staples.

Joe’s Reboot

Australian Joe Cross comes to the United States during his 60-day juice fast. He’s 100 pounds overweight, suffering from a debilitating autoimmune disease called chronic urticaria, and filled with steroids. He stays in New York City for the first 30 days and travels across the country during the last 30 days. While “tackling his demons head-on” he talks to ordinary Americans about the Standard American Diet and juicing. Watching Joe shrink during his odyssey was remarkable. By the end, I dare say he went from Average Joe to Sexy Joe. I couldn’t believe I was looking at the same man.

Siong’s Vanishing Migraines

Along the way, Joe meets Siong Norte, who agrees to a 10-day juice fast to see if her migraines would go away. Living with the pain has “become her new normal.” Siong struggles the first four days, and is ready to quit. She even goes to a steak house with her husband while fasting. The pain on her face is palatable. By the end of her fast, her migraines have stopped. She too is a changed woman.

Save Phil

Joe meets 429-lb truck driver Phil Staples, who suffers from the same autoimmune disease as Joe. This is where the movie turns serious. When Phil calls Joe asking for help, the focus is clear: SAVE PHIL. Phil also completes a medically supervised 60-day juice fast. You all have got to see this miraculous transformation.

Gather your husbands and children to watch this movie. It’s impossible not to be inspired.  The tenacity and dedication Joe, Siong, and Phil possess to heal themselves is a joy to watch. Fat, Sick, and Nearly Dead is a winner.
