Tomorrow, March 8, 2011 is International Women’s Day, a day when we celebrate the lives of women. Unfortunately, for many women (about 1 in 9 in Canada), too many lives are touched or ended prematurely by breast cancer.

Recently, we were asked if our green smoothie program would be helpful for someone who is facing breast cancer.

Here’s what our health consultant, Doctor Ariel Policano, NMD had to say:

When a person contemplates if something will work for breast cancer, you might want to approach it by asking the following question.  Will it improve the overall functioning of your body including:

  • your liver,
  • your immune system,
  • and your digestive health?

If the answer is yes, it is likely to have a very positive effect on your chronic health condition.

Here are the three ways that participating in  a Green Smoothie program like the 21-Day Green Smoothie Detox can improve the health of someone with breast cancer.

1.  Strengthen Your Liver

Green foods that are included in green smoothie recipes help the health of the liver. Chlorophyll and the high mineral content of greens, like kale, help the liver to work more effectively. The liver’s ability to break down harmful substances (so they do not continue to circulate in the blood or get deposited in the body) is incredibly valuable for good health and for supporting cancer recovery.

2.  Boost Your Immunity

Green foods also improve the health of the digestive system. Many chronic illnesses stem from issues with the gastrointestinal system. Chlorophyll – which is in green foods like kale, spinach, and parsley – will improve stomach acid.

This type of diet will also help to heal the stomach lining, which is called the mucosa. When the mucosa is inflamed as a result of eating sugary foods or processed foods that are hard to digest, this will cause stress on the immune system.

A strong immune system can help to prevent the body from developing cancer. For example, the natural killer cells of the immune system help to rid the body of cells that could become problematic.

3.  Ease Your Digestion

Green smoothies help to rest the digestive system. Smoothies are blended foods that are easy for the body to use almost instantaneously. Compare this to foods where you need to break something very complex or processed down. That take a lot of work from the enzymes of the body, from the liver and more.

When the digestive system is given a vacation from its normal duties of digestion and assimilation of heavier foods, it is able to take time for maintenance. This maintenance can allow the body to clear metabolic waste and do other repairs that improve overall health.

Think about how taking a physical vacation allows you to be much more effective when you return to work and life afterwards. The body works in a similar way.

With much love,
Ariel
