What does your body need for an efficient detox?
-
Antioxidants – glutathione or GSH, is the most powerful naturally occurring antioxidant in all human cells and is required for the body to detoxify. About 50% of the population LACKS this antioxidant, making it very difficult for them to benefit from the detox process. That is perhaps why different detox methods work for different people.
-
A good detox program – A good detox program takes into account ALL the various needs of the body and it’s detoxification systems. Any ‘effective’ detox has to be able to get to those stored toxins and get them out of the body. It has to pull them out of storage and get them into the blood. Once in the blood, it has to be able to tell the liver to speed up, take in more toxins and get rid of them. The liver takes fat soluble toxins and turns them into water soluble ones to enable the kidneys can get rid of them. Sweat, bile, poop; these are the body’s different ways of getting rid of toxins. For this process, sufficient water intake is crucial. A structured detox program that includes an element of support is integral to maximizing the benefits of detox.
Top 10 tips on how to detox successfully
- Listen to your body – it will tell you what it needs.

- Use foods and nutrients to help the detox process. E.g. Slippery elm has the ability to absorb fluids and heal digestive tract; Green powders to supplement for support; glutathione (GSH) can be found in broccoli and turmeric; sulphur can be found in garlic and onions. There are all sorts of amazing powerful plants and herbs that aid and help the body.
- Skin brushing, exercise, saunas are all things that can aid your detoxification process in a holistic way.
- Consider detox an on-going process.
- Consider your support system crucial to your success. Having that support when your coming off your detox can contribute to your success.
- Noone is beyond success: people with the worst diets at the outset are often the
most successful detoxers. - Ask for help if you need it; just like it takes a village to raise a child, it take a community to successfully detox!
- Be positive: have good thoughts!
- Consider what you put IN your body – the best way to start the detox process is to stop putting the bad stuff in.
- BREATHE and CHEW!!

For me, being gentle with myself is key on any detox. My body goes through changes; my emotions run wild. This is not the time to beat myself up about messing up the meal plan or not drinking enough water. Move on…that’s what I remind myself. What am I learning now? Each moment is an opportunity to learn.
