Q&A: Weaning a Baby to Raw Vegan Foods – Karen Ranzi
Written by Fiona on July 22, 2010 – -By Karen Ranzi

We are blessed to have the wonderful, Karen Ranzi, on the raw mom team.
Karen answers a common question on what to consider when weaning a baby to a raw or vegan diet. Many of you have emailed us about this, so we thought posting Karen’s reply would allow everyone to benefit. Karen will be giving more nutrition advice throughout the week on the blog and in the wisdom nuggets.
“My name is Karen Ranzi,
I am the author of the new book, Creating Healthy Children: Through Attachment Parenting and Raw Foods.
The type of food given to baby is dependent on the age of weaning. All babies require mother’s milk for at least the first year of life to create the strong immunity and bonding necessary for baby’s physical, mental, emotional and spiritual development.
The fat and protein in mother’s milk is sufficient for baby’s growth well into the second year. I encourage you to nurse as long as possible. Humans are the latest to mature of all mammals therefore our young require the longest nursing periods. I recommend a minimum of two years. If a mother is unable to nurse for at least the first year of baby’s life, then alternatives could be a wet nurse, milk bank, or raw (unpasteurized) goat milk.
The combination of half raw goat milk and half celery/carrot juice has been done successfully for those who were unable to nurse and unable to obtain milk from a human mother.
Toward the end of the first year, and no sooner, if baby is equipped with teeth to chew, then bite-sized pieces of fresh, ripe, organic fruits can be given one at a time. Observe any reaction, as some babies are not ready to eat until well into their second year of life.
I recommend that as soon as baby is accustomed to digesting a variety of fresh fruits given individually for chewing, that you begin to introduce green leafy vegetables in delicious green smoothies to provide additional minerals. It is best to start with the milder greens such as Romaine lettuce or spinach.
Remember that for each child the progression will be a little different depending on dentition and real desire and readiness to eat. Some children are simply curious about foods but not yet ready to eat. The mother must be observant of her baby to predict the right timing for introduction of foods.
Into the second year, baby can have diluted nut and seed milks and avocado for their fat and protein contents, but solid soaked nuts and seeds should not be given until later to avoid the development of a nut allergy as nuts require a greater digestive capacity.
All of this is described in much detail in my book Creating Healthy Children: Through Attachment Parenting and Raw Foods which is available at www.superhealthychildren.com, www.amazon.com and many raw food websites.
All the best for success,
Karen Ranzi”

Veganism is a new practice. its not a good idea unless you are lactose intolerant to be vagan. there is so many deficiencies the baby will go through while growing up. Vegetarianism is safe and healthy. as long as you get your dairy from a local organic farm with happy animals dairy is ESSENTIAL in the human diet. since cave man times humans have been eating cooked food and meat and eating animal products. it is UNNATURAL for humans to be deprived of food dereived from animals. Raw food practice is a great diet but RAW VEGAN is not good on so many levels. I know its difficult to find a good source to but animal derived foods these days but its well worth your time especially for your little one! things like eggs and milk rather it be from a cow or a goat will not only make ur baby less fussy but much healthier.

Danielle, you wrote, “as long as you get your dairy from a local organic farm with happy animals dairy is ESSENTIAL in the human diet”.
Can you back that up, please? Essential? Really? ESSENTIAL?

World Health organization does recommend nursing until at least the first 2 years of life and longer as long as mutually desired. If you are only going for 1 year or even less, yes, some sort of dairy would be essential since the baby’s brain needs those fats for proper brain development, especially during the second year of life. Again, breastmilk would be the most adequate sourse of those fats.
I also wanted to note that erruption of teeth is not a good indication of baby’s readiness for solids. Some babies are born with teeth, some don’t have them come out until well into the second year.
The most common 3 signs of readines to solids are
-tongue thrust reflex is gone
-baby can sit up well unassisted
-baby has developed pincer grasp (can pick up a small object with thumb and forfinger).
Just another proof that health gurus should stick to their subject and research baby nutrition thouroughly before giving recommendations. Though I have to admit, these are a BIG step from some of the other ones I’ve read out there. I remember back in the days Bragg’s ideas on baby nutrition sent cold chills down my spine, but these are way way better
, some facts I was pleasantly surprised with, but some are misleading.
It is always a good idea for a mother to research several sourses before making a decision. A good place to go for baby info is kellymom.com and llli.org. Both are experts in their field.

You can certainly see your skills within the paintings you write. The world hopes for more passionate writers like you who aren’t afraid to mention how they believe. All the time go after your heart.
