Kids’ Spiritual Cinema: Inspirational Impact!
Written by Joanne on May 20, 2010 – -
I simply have to tell you about a beautiful DVD that I recently purchased for my children.
My husband and I subscribe to the Spiritual Cinema Circle, which sends a DVD out every month with inspiring, positive feature-length films, short films, and documentaries. We only ever watch our own library of movie/series DVDs these days, rather than watching mind-numbing/violent/offensive shows that make their way onto TV (and reception for digital TV is not great at our current home, so there’s no point even trying to tune it in!), so we love receiving a fresh new DVD every month. Especially because the content is just so positive and life-affirming.
However, I wondered whether they had any special movie DVDs just for children – and they do! They have a DVD out called Kids Cinema Circle, and it’s just perfect.
The main feature is 50-minute-long Ryan’s Well – you may have heard of this documentary, especially if you live in Canada. It tells the inspiring story of Canadian Ryan Hreljac, a six-year-old boy who (in 1998) learned that children in a Ugandan village had to walk miles to get fresh drinking water. Ryan then decided to raise money to help buy the money to drill a well for the village. It blossomed from there, with Ryan raising hundreds of thousands of dollars and helping drill hundreds of wells throughout Africa. It makes my heart swell, just thinking about it.
My girls love watching this – when I tucked Evie in to bed after her first viewing of the documentary earlier that day, she said that she wanted to be “just like Ryan!”. Since then, Evie and Bella have been thinking a lot more about what they can do to help their community and communities around the world, and they want to show the film at their school (however, we need to check on the latter, because the films are really only meant for personal viewing…).
How many children’s shows and movies today have that sort of impact on kids?
The rest of the DVD features brilliant short films including The Dark, Paws, Joe, and Chasing Patterns, and there’s a flyer included that has discussion points for children. Stephen Simon and his engaging, highly articulate young co-host, actress Meghan McCandless (star of the film Indigo) introduce and discuss each film.
If you’re after beautiful, positive films for your family, I really do recommend that you purchase the Kids Cinema Circle DVD (currently on sale for US$11.95, down from US$19.95) – at the moment there’s only one volume, but I do hope that the Spiritual Cinema Circle will be making more of these special DVD compilations for children.
I love that we can use TV as a force for positive change!

Two thumbs up for this. For me its better to have this kind of DVD rather than let your kids watch cartoon movies. More good moral values are introduced and they give more inspiration to kids to do good and show their love to other people. Thanks for sharing this and hope they could produce more DVD’s.
