(90-Day Detox) Day 63 Today is Earth Day! What Can You Do?
Written by Tera on April 22, 2009 – -
Generally I believe in putting my attention on the things that make the world a better place to be. You won’t likely catch me engaged in a conversation about conspiracy theories, because I’d rather just get busy planting more flowers or sorting out my recycling.
Today is Earth Day. There are times and situations that call for more extreme measures.
On my Facebook account I’ve been leaving a few links to videos that I suggest people watch. And I can leave a link or two here, in case you’re curious, but don’t spend your day reeling in the negative information about how the state of things on our planet is beyond repair. Don’t spend as much time investigating the problems we have created for ourselves as you do msking choices that address these problems.
There’s no shortage of things you can do to take the next step toward a sustainable lifestyle and while it’s easy to point the finger at the bacon and egg eaters of the world, you could just as easily point it at yourself and ask,
“What more can I do to take responsibility for the health of our environment and humankind?”
Frreeeeakin’ big question, isn’t it! And I admit that not all people are up for the challenge of asking themselves, nevermind answering it.
Supreme Master TV has a pretty neat idea. They recognize that the planet is in crisis, and rather than disperse into a whole bunch of different ideas, concerns, etc., they have simply ONE mission: Convert people to a vegetarian diet because THIS ALONE would handle 80% of our toxic burden on the planet.
THIS IS WORTH WATCHING. It really lays out some statistics at the end. It gets to the point. I’m sure there are more graphic versions and some with less subtitles, but I figured this would do the trick, and on the same page are dozens of links to similar resources, too.
If you’re having trouble finding reasons not to choke back another piece of pizza, then google some John Robbins videos.
They say that even after people have stopped trying to help themselves, they still can be motivated to help another person. Interesting idea! Let’s use it to our advantage and inspire the world to take Responsibility for our health and the sustainability of life on Earth.
I know I do A LOT to be more environmentally conscious, but there are little things I let slip here and there; a light on, the heat too high, etc. In honor of Earth Day I wanted to point my finger at my own nose and ask what I can do…
Happy Earth Day, Everyone!
What are you going to do to make a difference? Personally, I’m going to spend the day reflecting on that question very seriously, and then I’ll get back to you.
Green is the color of my Love,
Tera

We signed up for a composting workshop that council has running here. I took our two sons (11&12yo) with me and they had a ball learning all about composting and how good this is on many levels. We now have a composting bin and scrap bin. Although we can’t actually put kitchen scraps into the compost bin because our beagle dug a tunnel underneath to eat all the scraps!!! :-O So we’ve decided that food scraps will be put on top of an empty garden bed, then AFTER our beagle takes whatever he is wanting the rest can go into the compost bin. I tell you what, beagles are adorable but they sure are a handful!
Blessings,
Gypsy Queen

Yesss! Celebrate Earth Day! I’m having a potluck with my students, a very special one because they have to bring a vegan dish (extra point if it’s raw
). This is challenging for most of them because in Mexicali people are really eat meaters!! We have talked about the importance of reducing our consumption of animal products (not only in food, but also in clothes). Our footprint will hugely decrease if we just cut in half this consumption! They are really impressed to know this information and to realize how many products they use have something from animals.
I also, posted some information regarding this topic in my personal blog, I’m trying to share it with all the people that are interested in reading it.
So, let’s celebrate! Today is Earth Day!!!
Love and Earth hugs,

“I wanted to point my finger at my own nose and ask what I can do” — So true. On that note, I will shut down my computer before bed tonight, instead of leaving it on all night
I slighly missed my bedtime, though, so I’ll keep having to work on that one.
Love and hugs

We’ve gotten pretty good about composting, reusing and recycling. We need to work on decreasing our use of electricity – especially those “vampires” like leaving the computers on all the time.
NPR (Diane Rheam Show) had a great discussion yesterday concerning the effect of human population growth – and the use of birth control (toxins) on our environment.
Green is an absolutely magical color. Its the color of the HEART chakra!
Bright Blessings,
Karyn

Great questions Tera. I continue to ask myself that daily while I make little changes for our household. Sometimes I get frustrated at the baby steps, but it’s something. And now I can feel good that I’m doing a lot by not eating animal products … and here I thought I was just doing it for me.

Happy belated Earth Day! I just started a worm compost bin on my balcony which is pretty fun!
Yesterday I went to Bowen Island, a 30 min. boat ride from Vancouver and a gorgeous nature retreat from the city! My husband and I hiked around the island all day, and for lunch we had celery and green smoothies. What a wonderful day to appreciate the beauty of the Earth and remind us to keep making positive changes in our lives. Qur “footprint” is pretty small, but we could always buy more organic produce, grow a balcony garden, unplug our electronics at night, and take shorter showers.

I have been reading In Defense of Food. It has reminded me that not all farms can afford to be considered organic. I love the farmers market, and get most of my food there in season. Talk to the farmers who produce your food. Many of them aren’t certified, and do not use pesticides or the like on their produce. Besides, the local food didn’t travel as far, and tastes a bit better because it was allowed to ripen properly.
I presently recycle, even though it is not required by my apt building. I ride my bike to school in the summer. I’d love to have my own place so I can compost and grow my own garden. I can work on unplugging my cell phone charger and anything not plugged into my smart strip. It’s great to bounce ideas off everyone, and learn from you guys.

Earth Day came and went – I only hope that the plans made to make a better world will be realized …

It’s sometimes a challenge for me to keep the earth in my perspective. I get so caught up in self-change and improvement I lose sight that these changes cannot be independent of my environment.
In my university days I was inspired. There was no recycling program at my university, so I started one. I just stepped up and did the work.
Hoping that girl is still in here somewhere!
