(90-Day Detox) Day 62: Stepping It Up a Notch
Written by Tera on April 20, 2009 – -Well, well, well…
Look at me in the middle of the afternoon blogging. I can hardly believe it!
*grin*
That’s a refreshing change.
Things are slowing down a bit more and it feels good to get my feet on the ground. (Doubt I’ll keepĀ ‘em there for long, though!) I wanted to give you an idea of what I’ll be doing for myself in the weeks to come–at least as far as following the 90-day detox is concerned.
It’s incredible to think of how quickly time flies. We’re already two thirds of the way through this program. Then what? I ask myself a lot and haven’t quite answered that one yet. There are a lot of programs coming down the pipes, but my hope is that this blog can stay as somewhat of a pulse, a heartbeat for our community here. It’s felt good being on the blog every day. Sounds like many of you have drawn upon that support to help you through this process as well.
As I mentioned, it’s time to step up the volume a bit and if you’ve not been feeling very successful until now in your efforts to follow a cleaner dietary regime, then here’s what I’d like to suggest:
- Don’t focus on what you’re going to avoid. Focus on what you’re going to INCLUDE in your diet.
What we resist, persists. Remember that one.
- If you’re struggling to be disciplined when it comes to what kind of food to eat, then control some of the other variables in the equation. (Quantity, time of day, etc.)
I’ve known people to eat a standard meat and potato diet, but because they don’t overeat or eat late at night, they look and feel amazing. So it’s not just WHAT you eat that counts.
Find some element that you CAN easily confront or change and start there. That’s the famous “Take it on a gradient” approach that we like to follow around here.
I’ve been at this raw food thing for about 6 years now. I need to pick what will challenge me according to where I’m at. So, I’m going to be focusing on a few things for the next 30 days of the program. Since I started today, I guess that means I’ll officially finish on the 92nd day, but that’s a lucky number, so what the heck.
- Making juices, especially GREEN juices.
Juice feasting isn’t working out very easily for me. I think it’s in large part because my juicer is the pits. I just can’t spent a couple hours messing with the whole system. I might get there eventually, but right now, I’m not there. At least a juice a day should do the trick to help me, I think.
- Increasing my discipline to go to yoga DAILY for the next 30 days.
I took up a 30 day challenge and I love that the commitment forces me to restructure a bit and get this as my priority. I can hardly believe that 6 week ago I was taking my first class. It had been over 3 years since I’d taken a yoga class! Now I’m going EVERY DAY!
*pat myself on the back*
- Getting sufficient sleep.
This is a bit one for me and seems to be creeping back in as a small problem. I started out this detox on the couch and I’m back there again. I think the key is going to find the man of my dreams and then there will be some incentive for going to bed. Otherwise, the couch serves me just fine.
- Keeping my house in order.
I’m not looking to get anything near what my mother and her mother have, but just want to feel more on top of the dust and laundry around here. Aaaaaaand, here’s a big one:
- Doing my best to focus on one thing at a time. Or, in other words, finishing what I start.
I notice that my productivity is seriously compromised by the number of distractions that fall on my plate. So this week my challenge is to be as disciplined as I can at finishing one thing before I start another. I think what that means is that I will have only specific times of the day that I open my mail account to answer messages. If I divide my day into different responsibilities and areas of focus, and design my week to have a bit of a rhythm, then I think good things could come of this.
Just like everything else, I’m taking this on a gradient. I notice I’m getting better at little things that I used to just leave. I’m not perfect, but I’m getting better. That counts for something.
One of the things that drains people immensely is UNFINISHED PROJECTS, or incomplete cycles of action. You have NO idea how much energy this takes up in people. There’s actually a science behind it–a discussion of flows of energy and exchange, etc. that can really get quite interesting. The telephone calls that distract, the emails that come in, the thoughts that wander, the fridge door that opens.
*Sheesh*
What do you know?! Looks like it’s time for this body of mine to boot it to yoga class. Only a one hour class today. But, I’ve got a few aches to iron out, so should be good.
Love and snuggles,
Tera
P.S.
Your turn! What are you going to do to step it up a few notches over the next 30 days?

I love the idea of creating a rhythm in my life that works. Those things that I need to do on a daily basis are what keep me rolling. The consistency is important to me. I am a creature of habit…so if my habit is to plunk myself down at the pc at a certain time that’s what happens. Need to rethink that. No excuses, no reasons why or why not just put the plan in place and execute it. My 30 day commitment will be to keep to a simple but deliberate plan of action for my daily routines. Thanks Tera for putting this out there for all of us!

Tera,
As suggested in our last call – I will be committing to 2 days per week juice feasting and this will continue until the 90-day program is over. I too, do not have a powerful juicer and will have to seriously think about a new acquisition when I return.
Monday is my normal fast day so Tuesday and Wednesday will be juice feasting days. Thursday and Friday are typically green smoothies and mono meals – leaving Saturday and Sunday for soups and salads. Presently I have about 2L of green juice per day which I think I’ll continue and increase that to 5 or 6L on juice feasting days. This week will be the trial and I may have to mix it up but without doubt 2 days juice feasting.

Aaaahh, finishing tasks, now there’s the rub for me. I tend to be more of a visionary, so I can get caught up in the ‘next’ thing. The sheer excitement of the new can contribute to my forgetting where I am and finishing that task. Discipline is key. I function better with a plan, so I think if I put my ideas on the calendar….week or two or more down the road, then I won’t forget and I can focus on what I need to finish right now. I love finishing things, but starting things, I guess, is something I must love more. Never thought about it like this before.
Thanks Tera for always challenging us to look deeper.

You are all so empowering and inspiring!
I made the commitment to juice feast a minimum of 1 day/week and intend to stick with it. It’s amazing what power there is in writing it down/putting it “out there”. I’d been dreading trying to juice feast for one measly day and now … I am SO excited!
I commit to getting more sleep. I was going to say “enough” but as all you parents out there know … that’s not always possible. So, I’m going to go to bed at the same time each evening. No later than 10pm and wake up at the same time each morning … 5am AND … I am going to start doing yoga again! I’m not sure what my not doing yoga is all about. (I can make some pretty good guesses though and they’d be along the lines of “Got too much else to do!”) I’m a children’s yoga teacher for goodness sake, but …my own personal practice has gone kafooey these past several months. No more!
Here’s to taking care of ourselves and supporting each other! HURRAH!!
Bright Blessings,
Karyn

Tera, I am new to the site here so I thought I would look in the archives. There I read that you made a commitment to post everyday for the 90 day detox. Girl, you are impressive! That alone is a big achievement – cause you’re keeping it up. WHOO HOO!
(So I also understand now that your 90 day detox is in 3 stages and the last 30 days has a theme to it. I think I’m up to speed lol.) For these 30 days I’m going to focus on green juices from farmer’s market materials and incorporating them on a daily basis. I’m going to also exercise physically every day (for any length of time) but with my mind attached & present.

Tera, you are sounding very focused.
I know that when I skip my green juice it does affect how I feel and what I reach for in the pantry. Green juices and green smoothies are just WONDERFUL for feeling clean inside and out.
This week I’m going to focus on making that second smoothie in the evening so that I don’t go searching for wheat and dairy.
Blessings,

Tera–”One of the things that drains people immensely is UNFINISHED PROJECTS, or incomplete cycles of action. You have NO idea how much energy this takes up in people.” Oh SO TRUE!! I find that to definitely be the case for me, and I’m working on it. It’s really neat to be working on these profound realizations and then to hear that you and others are coming to the same conclusions
Renata–I love your idea of a computer fast from 8 pm to 6 am. I think I should do something like that. I admit, it’s sounds cooler when you call it a computer fast.
My commitment for the last 30 days is to do 80-10-10, with an average of 1.5 lbs of greens a day, but allowing sea salt as needed (and herbs, since I have nothing against them). This has been the most effective eating paradigm for me of all the ones I’ve tried so far, and I was able to lose a lot of chemical toxins (I could smell them and taste them!) and cellulite last month when I mostly stuck to this plan, so this month my goal is to completely stick to this plan.
Love and hugs

Oh, thank you Courtney!
Yes, computer fast sounds so cool
And i love your idea of 80-10-10.. lower fat version of raw menu works best for me too.
Thank you Tera, for this commitment idea! I couldn’t believe it would work for me before i tried.. I always thought it’s the waste of time *blush*
But it really works! It really helped me to be on the water for two days. And i feel so good now! Thank you soooo much!

I’m committing to getting rid of a last few vices I’ve been hanging onto, prior to heading into the 6 week detox! I have been off almost all dairy for some time, so that has been no biggie to me; gluten has been a challenge but I have been doing much much better at it. Sugar however, and my single morning cup of coffee, have hung on and I’m literally scared about giving them up! Why?? No idea. Then I’ve sortof made corn tortilla chips and other corn items a crutch to get off gluten, but now that’s got to go too! Was planning on starting free of all these things sooner, but was laid up sick all weekend and just couldn’t manage it. But this week, going shopping tonight for shopping list, and going to be trying to dehydrate some fresh raw crackers for the first time this week! I’m looking forward to starting a new chapter of my life, now is the perfect time for me, even though I’m a little bit scared…..

I love it: focus on what you want to include, not on what you want to exclude. That’s one of the things that I’ve noticed had the best effect for me, personally.
Also, congrats on committing to juicing. It’s something I’ve been doing for a few months now, and I’ve been seeing great results!

Tera — pat yourself on the back several times … and everyone else hanging out here too … long term I need to schedule a computer fast as well as focus on completing projects as well (or releasing them??) — I had never thought before about what an energy drain that is!
I’m focusing on eating wonderful young coconuts this week along w/ other fresh fruits and veggies … and at least one green juice a day. I haven’t yet figured out how to juice feast and not have a bit of energy drain when it comes to running, so I have to be careful what day I try to do that but I will do it going forward approximately a day a week … and then more in May (I’m assuming it will fit in with the 6 week deep detox!)
So, in addition to continuing my running training plan (has been going great — such a mind game some days though), I’m going to commit to a blog post each day, starting today, for a week (not going to commit beyond that at the moment, LOL).
Love you all xoxo

I want my stepping-up to be related to moving my body. My next goal is to get myself off of dairy. I’ve conquered meat. Dairy is next. And once I’ve achieved that, gluten will be the next hurdle. Back in November I figured I’d be totally raw by now.
But that’s okay. It’s better to make small changes that I’m sticking with rather than the big changes that yes, impressed others, but were quite stressful and radical for me to stick to.
