Shona's Story

Written by Joanne on December 23, 2008 – -

My experiences with postnatal depression, and taking myself and life very seriously, have made the past few years challenging for me at times. Coming through the other side of this, I can see that it happened to teach me the value of creative play and fun in our lives, and also the importance of honouring our inner children and what matters to us most on a deep level.

My name is Shona and I live in Devon, England with my beautiful 8 year old daughter Jana (pronounced Yana). My particular loves are children, nature, humour and food – especially desserts.  I love to create recipes that are yummy and kind for us and our planet. Being in nature, and living as naturally as possible are important for me to feel whole and settled – I may be a bit of a nature fairy! I especially love walking in nature and swimming in the sea.

j-and-me-sydney-20082Having Jana in my life is such a gift as she reminds me how to play and live in the moment, and also mirrors for me things that I can still heal.

When Jana was about 5 we went to see a play called How to Hug Trees and other Secrets and I remember finding the idea of hugging trees BRILLIANT! We have a particular tree near where we live with a beautiful energy that we love to climb and sit in.

Three powerful tools for my journey through life are The Work of Byron Katie, EFT and Ho’o pono pono. I am currently training to become a certified facilitator of The Work which involves inquiring openly into any thoughts that cause me stress – it is amazing how often I end up laughing!

As a qualified veterinary surgeon I currently practice acupuncture and natural nutrition consultations. I am passionate about the health and wellbeing of humans and animals. My focus has switched in the past couple of years from dealing with disease to looking at how we can build and maintain health for ourselves and our children, and animal companions. I believe we need to take full responsibility for ourselves and our lives, and that addressing nutrition and attitude of mind are fundamental for our health and wellbeing. Absolutely with this for me comes playing, laughing, simplicity and having fun, and simultaneously connecting with nature and our common humanity on a deep level.

resized-snjgelato2Today my love for children (of all ages!), natural foods and fun, along with Jana’s love for all different kinds of frozen desserts has led me to set up a virtual online gelateria (ice cream parlour) at www.TheHappyGelateria.com. This is a happy place for anyone to visit, with lots of free yummy recipes for sugar-free, wheat-free and dairy free ice cream, smoothies and treats, as well as a ‘gelateria lounge’ in which to relax and meet friends, inspiring and encouraging ideas and a free kids area co-created with Jana.

Jana and I have put together two great all natural ice cream recipe eBooks, and an eco-friendly ice cream party guide that involved a LOT of fun playing in the kitchen!  Our next project will be a smoothie recipe eBook with a difference!

My wish with The Happy Gelateria is to co-create an online global family that is a place to be nourished and supported, to be ourselves, to share positivity and to have FUN.  We love life, and enjoy playing with all the possibilities and opportunities it brings!

I invite you to enjoy spending some time with us, whether for a visit when you are feeling hungry, or to stay and relax when you are looking for good company.  I would love to see you there!

Smiley hugs,

Shona xx
