Monday’s Inspiration from Mae West
Written by Tera on August 25, 2008 – -
I thought to spice up the blog, we could start doing some diva devotionals–taking the time to honor and celebrate the lives of extraordinary women. I’ve been reading a bit about Mae West in different places. I didn’t know anything about her, really. I love her curves, and I wish we did more to honor gorgeous shapes like hers these days!
I watched for the 5th time this Dove ad which is so telling about our twisted perceptions of beauty. I have to tip my smoothie jug to Dove for the remarkable work they’re doing in the name of “Real Beauty”. It may be a big marketing tactic, but if it’s empowering women then I’m all for it.
Today’s empowered woman is Mae West. There are all kinds of different stories about her that you can find online by doing a google search, but I thought these divalicious quotes were enough to give us a sassy point of view and inspire us all to embrace our curves and take up more space in the world!
I generally avoid temptation unless I can’t resist it.
The curve is more powerful than the sword.
When I’m good I’m very, very good, but when I’m bad, I’m better.
Cultivate your curves–they may be dangerous but they won’t be avoided.
Look your best–who said love is blind?
Good women are no fun… The only good woman I can recall in history was Betsy Ross. And all she ever made was a flag.
I didn’t discover curves; I only uncovered them.
You’re gorgeous, Darling. Dress it up and show it off a little!

I love this, Tera. Women back in Mae West’s time were celebrated for their curves. I read somewhere that Marilyn Monroe wore a size 16 dress. Even though sizes might have been slightly different back then than they are now it says a lot that one of the sexiest women in our lifetimes was a size 16!!
Thanks, Tera, for encouraging all of us to be healthy, sassy and to have fun in the bodies we’ve got, curves and all!!
Love, Julie B.

I came across your comments on Mae West and found them of interest to comment. Mae West was very short, not much taller than 5′ 2″ at very most. It was her platform shoes and hair that gave her the illusion of height. She was quite plain in her early Vaudeville career and past forty when she went to Hollywood and found fame in motion pictures. Much of her appeal was her way of speaking, and the persona she put over would probably not have worked during the silent film era.
What made Mae West the enduring icon she is today is that she was a Sex Personality more than an Sex Symbol. She was very canny in her maintaining the Diamond Lil image and now “Mae West” has become a folk legend if you will. A true one of a kind legend! I am preparing a Mae West biography and anyone who might be interested may google my name to find out more. Keep up the interesting blog! Cheers. R. Mark Desjardins

“I read somewhere that Marilyn Monroe wore a size 16 dress.” She was not a size 16. She was betwen an 8-10 at the most. Also, the dress sizes from her time period to now have changed. If you were a Size 10, it is now a Size 8. a Size 16. Now a size 14.
Again, Marilyn was never a size 16! that came about from a fake email that was passed long.
