I Confess!! I’ve never made a green juice!!

Written by Tera on July 23, 2008 – -

I know, I know.

This should be simple. I should be able to do this, but I’ll wave the

“I’m a Single, Self-Employed, Homeschooling Mother!!” flag as my excuse.

I’ve been eating too much fat.

I’ve been eating too late and night.

I’ve not been exercising enough and I NEED TO TRY GREEN JUICES!!

So, while I know a lot of people out there wouldn’t necessarily admit it…

…I need help.

*sniff*

I tried sprouts all by myself and felt brave and powerful. But now I’ve got sprouts on my balcony growing 3 feet tall. I have enough seeds to feed a nation of hamsters, but I realized I really don’t like sprouting. :(

So, juicing is my only uncharted territory. That and regular enemas! *GASP* But Gina sent me some suggestions this morning so… don’t think I won’t get there eventually.

I just want to get the springy summer vibe pulsing through my system and I bet juicing is the way to do it. But I’ve always had a button on wasting all that FIBER! *sigh*

I can feel I’m not my perky self and I know I need a cleanse of some kind.

Can someone hold my hand and walk me through this green juice process, please?

And no! I don’t want to watch any videos. :-P

Just give me a shopping list, some recipes and make me a HAPPY WOMAN!!!

Mmmmmuah!

Love and gratitude,

Tera

Have no fear, green juice is nice not mean! Hope you possess a good juicer or at least a juiceman?
Here is a super easy mix that will make you smile:
3 carrots (all produce should be local, organic or at least organic)
    handful of italian parsley
    one cucumber
one fuji apple, any apple really
    a chunk of ginger
    one lemon, peel and all
    2 stalks celery

Juice it all, add more mild greens if you like: collards, kale and spinach are awesome.

Pour it in a bowl and add a cup or so of coconut water. If you want super green juice, add a dash of spirulina.
mix it up and drink it down, so very good. i do this daily in many many different combos. the lemon and ginger makes it so very good.
Good juicing, you know where to find me if you have trouble, but you won’t.
Put your big girl juicing panties on and Just Juice It!

    Tera,

I have to say that Debbie’s juice is mY FAVE. I drink this daily (except without carrots and apple or use I green apple for less sugar. I ferment my coconut water which makes the drink a probiotic.. (which curbs cravings, fights infection, helps in digestion and weight management. I always add spirulina and vitamineral green too!!!

    YOu CAN DO THIS….

here is another very cooling one
    3 cucumbers
    handful mint
    handful ginger
    1 lime
    3 stalks celery
coconut water or coconut water kefir
    1 green apple

Okay girl, here is my daily first am green juice:
sweet: 1 apple (more if you want more sweet)
sour: 1 lemon peeled and then juiced.
    salty: 4-5 stems of celery.
bitter: half a bundle of kale (rapini works too but more bitter)
modifier: 1 large cucumber (this neutralizes some of the bitter taste of the kale)
optional: asparagus is kind of sweet too.

    * juice them all.
    * i skim it through a metal sieve to get the scum off.
    * enjoy outside with the birdies.

    Hi Tera,
Yeah for green juice! Here’s a juice I love:
Half to a whole head of romaine lettuce
4 Kale or chard or collard leaves, or a big handful of spinach
    1 apple
    1 lemon

Just play around with it… a little bit of this, a little bit of that. I love putting in celery and cucumbers. My kids like apple, carrot and lemon juiced up. I personally find ginger too strong but you might adore it. Go girl, go!!

    Love you, Julie

HELP!!! Could someone please define “bunch” or “bundle” of greens ie:kale or spinach, collards, etc? My store has awfully large bundles. When talking large kale leaves, how many leaves would you use??? Thanks so much.

Holy moley, I am right there with you sister. Here is my favorite juice recipe – you buy the goods, you wash em’, you juice em’ you drink it and it makes you feel fan-freakin-tastic.

    1/2 head Kale
    I head romain
    3 oranges
    4 apples (small ones)
    1 pint strawberries
    1 lemon or lime
    2 stalks celery

This tastes sooooo delicious, drink it right away, as it separates pretty quickly. You can vary the amounts per what you have in the house. Just juice, anything is better than nothing!

Cucumber and kale. I love to juice it.

Or, just straight cucumber juice… so REFRESHING and DELICIOUS.

I also love zucchini juiced with dandelion and carrots or cucumber.

Apple is always welcome in any green juice.

YOU GO GIRL!!! I’m here for you too!!! :)

A simple and delicious green juice I like to make and drink is:

1 med- large bunch of kale or dark green leafy veggies
(in response to Mary Ellen’s question- a bunch of greens is usually 10 or so good sized leaves. This looks like a lot, but when you juice greens they become considerably smaller)

    5-6 fresh oranges (or grapefruit)
This juice reminds smells like a summer day when you mow the lawn, but it tastes like fresh squeezed orange juice. An added benefit is that the acid in the citrus fruit helps your body absorb the calcium from the greens more efficiently!

    250 gr. Spinach + 2 Apples

It’s easy, good AND so palatable.

I do it all the time!

And, YES, plain cucumber is my second favourite as well!!

I buy green juice every morning but I have not started doing myself because my current juicer doesnt like to juice anything but carrots and apples.

I want a juicer that does a good job with cucumbers, spinach, kale, parsley, etc. I want LOVE some feedback on what kind of juicers you gals use and if you like them for green juices. I have tried to do a lot of research on line but it leaves me confused or thinkig I need to pay $400 for a juicer, which I can not do right now.
Tera- I feel soooo good from my daily green juices. They feel like special goodness going into my veins!!!

Do one every morning…love them. They are all basically the same…a green leafy veg (dandelion greens, kale, cabbage, or a dark green lettuce), celery, cucumber, lemon or lime, ginger. I don’t add an apple, but if you do it should be green. In addition, beets with their greens, carrots without their greens, parsnips, bell peppers, radishes, etc can be added, as can extra greens like sunflower lettuce, sprouts, mint, parsley, or cilantro.

While you are getting used to the VERY green taste, add some stevia for sweetness. Even though I’ve been doing this for a year, I still add a little.

I also add wheat grass powder, Seagreens, Klamath blue-green algae, spirulina, and chlorella to my smoothies for more green goodness in my day. (I recently bought Raw Magic, about adding superfood powders to stuff…really fun, even if they have no real nutritional value…I love eating bright blue, green and purple things.)

A good book: Juicing, Fasting, and Detoxing for Life: Unleash the Healing Power of Fresh Juices and Cleansing Diets. by Cherie Calbom

Unlike most juicing books, her recipes are all green…almost no fruits.

I’m not the slightest bit sorry I email you because what I have to say is ALWAYS worth your time to read.;-)

    Embrace your inner sizzle.

    Heya..

First off, my website’s not complete yet so there’s really not much point in posting my link. But I did anyhow because it will be very shortly. So do check back. In the meantime you can find me on FaceBook under the group Naked Lunch.

As for you Tera and green juicing.. I wanted to offer you some solace in letting you konw that you are not the only single-mum out there attempting to assimilate all of this brilliant stuff into an already overstuffed life. I too am a member of that club.

Since we’re being honest, I’m wondering why in the heck you’re trying to juice it all at all. Why not chuck it all in a VitaMix for a one-stop-shop kind of approach and get all the yummy flavours and the fibre and make your life a little simpler? As for recipes.. I cannot recommend highly enough the book Green for Life by Victoria Boutenko. It’s short and sweet and [ahem] easy to digest and the recipes kick butt.

I’d be happy to copy and paste some in an email to you if you cannot get out to get the book right away. Feel free to email me directly at lara@naked-lunch.ca if you’d like me to do that. Meanwhile, I just received one new one from Victoria in my inbox last night that you might like to try:

Take one whole watermelon: rind, seeds, flesh, ‘n’ all.
    Cut it into cubes.
    Toss in the VitaMix
    Blend until smooth.
    Voila!

Word on the street is that Watermelon (if you include the rind) has similar properties to [ahem] Viagra and acts as an aphrodisiac. I can’t think of a better reason than that to jump on the Green Smoothie bandwagon! An added bonus with this one is that it comes out pink instead of green and there’s only ONE ingredient.. (though I admit to preferring my smoothies uber cold. So I might add some ice too).

Have a blissful day Tera and give yourself kudos for being brave enough to acknowlege your challenges publicly. Brilliant!

In health and all things beautiful.

Mary Ellen asked about green quantity… Mostly you just have to experiment with how many leaves of the greens you use, Mary Ellen. And it depends on what else is being juiced and on which green you’re using (some are juicier than others). Try starting out with 3 or 4 leaves, add the other fruits/veggies and see how you like the taste. Add more greens if you’d like to or juice fewer leaves next time!

    Hope this helps… Hugs, Julie
